M-E (typ240)

I was hoping to see the M262 prices go down because of this announcement. Any reason why it shouldn't except for the M-E being a tactical move by Leica to divert users from Zenit?

I think part of the "tactic" was to slow down the used M240 market. Lots of folks (me included) will just wait and buy a used Leica. Leica gets nothing from that. I am sure they see that every used M240 sold is one less M10 that they could have sold. Now, a brand-new, never used M-E is "just" a little more than a used M240, and has a warranty, etc.

Well, the M262 is a stripped down M240 so even "on sale" the price is ridiculous compared to the new M-E. But... the new M-E is supposed to be a limited run? If not, the M262 doesn't make sense.

Where do people come up w limited run for this kamera? No mention of that on Leica’s website. And if it was they fer sure would talk that up and have the edition # engraved somewhere on top of the kamera like they do...

Without derailing the thread, can someone explain the meaning of the "Typ XXX" numbers? I couldn't find an explanation online.

I've seen it applied across various Model designations on their M Homepage: e.g., Leica M-E (Typ 240) and Leica M (Typ 240), Leica M (Typ 262) etc...

Leica rarely does that any longer. The current green M10-P safari, for example, is limited to 1500 units, but there's no indication of that on the camera.

When Leica introduced the M240 in 2012 they basically stated that all "M" going forward would simply be called "M" and the 240 was just kind of model/stock number, but soon afterwards like right away everyone else started referring to it as the 240 so they pretty much just gave up on the "M" naming idea and called the following models in the series by similar names M246, M262 and finally the M-E Type 240. And of course with the M10 they made the decision to go back the old naming system.
As far as why they choose 240, 246 and 262 maybe someone else can enlighten us on that.

New M240 as result of M-E MKII are offered under 5K USD now.
And h00(@S4#^ !!! - M-E MKII is available for pre-order at 3.995 USD.
No idea from where this 600 units only speculation comes from. Leica will sell 6000 at easy with this price.

Very good. Used M240 will deep down in price. I think it will become best M for travel.
Will cost not too much to feel uncomfortable to use it on the street without insurance, weather sealed, usable ISO6400 and biggest battery capacity among all Leica's mades.

I'm waiting for 2K$ used M240 offers. :)

I'm sure they may well be able to sell many more than 6,000 but they are making 750, as mentioned above with this link, several times:

Also look forward to drop in M240 or M262 prices. :D

M-E will crash the used 240 market..whilst setting up for the new M250 or whatever Leica decides to call it..
Cant see M240 owners being too happy with this...as in..buy high..sell low..kind of thing..
I'm seriously thinking about getting this M-E though..
But think..in a couple of years time..this will be a pretty ancient camera design..

Popflash just had one for I think $2100. They are getting pretty common to find for around $2300 to $2500.

How are you still able to use film M? It is next to seventy years old design.

Cant ..its too damn old..lol..
Cant put Tech Pan in it anymore..my film M's that is..
Toooo...ooolllldddd....the internals that is...
Old camera chips etc..1040p video..still usable..but barely..

It's quite a handsome model. I hope Leica continues this trend of offering entry level cameras at prices more people can afford. A $4k M is just about right IMO.

Now they just need to make it with 43mm frame lines!

To keep things in perspective, current discounts on the Fujifilm GFX50R make medium format slightly cheaper than Leica M.
