M10 Battery BP-SCL5 availability

I wonder what has changed? Has Leica released the rights to manufacture or is it just that dodgy* manufacturers have identified a need and feel it’s worth a risk.

My personal feeling is that the problem stems more from Leica’s incompetence than evil intent. I mean, setting the price high then having none to sell is hardly a way to make money.

* Legally dodgy, no judgement on the batteries. We will wait and see on that.
It is a good way to „force“ you to buy a new camera and thus make money.

Sorry if it’s been said already but one of the third party batteries is claiming 1800 mAh as opposed to 1100 for the original. Whether it is true is another matter.

My rule of thumb is to always buy at least one, if not two, spare batteries any time I buy a battery dependent camera. This policy has done me well over the years.

Leica USA responded to my query in January when this issue of spares for the M10 series came up: they were able to sell me a second spare, so I now have four batteries and two M10 bodies (M10-M, M10-R). If my past experience is any measure, these two cameras and four batteries will out last me ...

I'm sure this battery shortage is a relatively short term thing driven by global market issues outside of Leica's control. It's much less serious than the situation in 2005 when Polaroid stopped making film ... rendering all my SX-70 cameras potentially just shelf ornaments forever. Happily, the future smiled on us, The Impossible Project re-invented the film, and Polaroid is now healthy enough to continue in operation for the foreseeable future.

There's always hope.

I wonder if the Chinese batteries will be like the ones recently purchased for my X-100V. They have a usb C connector on the end so you don’t need a separate charger. There’s a row of 4 green LEDs that light up to show state of charge. These come on while charging or you can press a tiny button to check a battery without needing to stick it in the camera.
Rated at 1600 mAh 7.4V. Price was most reasonable, three for $50 Canadian including tax.

At least from looking at the product photos, these do not have a USB socket, and there probably isn’t room in a BP-SCL5 for a socket and wiring. But who knows. I’ll tell you when they arrive.
