M10 images leak

Not really a potential weakness, as you see in the cutaway drawing the main board is squashed in because of space restraints with no air circulation or other cooling measures possible around the CPU, which is next to te sensor (another heat source) as well.
In that situation I can imagine the designers limiting heat-producing processes like long-term intensive CPU load for Video processing or long exposures (which heat up the sensor).

If I were to shoot video I wouldn't use a rangefinder for that (proper tool and all that instead of the one size fits all). For the type of things that the M excels in I think Leica has made some good decisions though I like the size and weight of the M 262 and will probably pick another one up sometime in the future. Hopefully used prices will come down some in the next year or so.

The right tool for job I guess but I shoot all of my B&W with an MM. A rangefinder wouldn't be my video tool of choice under almost any situation. I think it is a wonderful camera for what i shoot. In fact so much so I have moved from all of my DSLR gear to all Leica M even for my pro work. If I were to shoot video I would use a video camera. But they are two very different skill sets and I know which one I really excel in but I don't think the majority of Leica M shooters are looking for video from a rangefinder. There are PLENTY of mirrorless and DSLR options that are the one size fits all varieties.

I think both things are true. I do think that heat management would have been a big issue with video and their priority is stills with this camera and there were more people out there asking for a thinner camera rather than one with better video functions. Also, they are right about needing extra inputs that would have bulked up the camera. And yeah, if you want to do video there are other, better cameras for that. If you need a dual function camera then that's where they are positioning the SL.

When I think of Leica to me it is M. A true rangefinder. Simple and easy. And being that is what separates it from all the other options out there. In fact Leica is still going to offer the M 240 and I think other Leica options will retain video. But I do believe that most M shooters shoot it for a lot of the reason I shoot with M, a lot of what it doesn't have and the fact it is a true alternative to the gadget heavy other options already available.

Personally I have never used the video on my M100. So I would accept the trade off of removing the video functionality so the camera can be thinner and does not overheat.

You are absolutely right. It's a weakness in design. If they made the camera bigger and added more cooling elements then they'd be able to control sensor heat better. You can see this in the Panasonic GH5...bigger than before and I read that part of that is for heat management. But wait, people wanted the camera to be smaller, so this is no option. That's called a tradedoff decision 🙂.

Yes - that is why they continue making the M240 - more generous main board - better cooling- thus video. Not a design weakness, a design choice.

Yes, but to me the M is a travel camera ( Leica has been since Dr.Paul Wolff) For travel there is a limit to the amount of gear one carries, and a separate video system does not fit. The SL is too bulky - try and fit such a system (plus backup body, etc) into a carry-on bag in a plane.

A7 and G7 shoot video just fine...and they are at least as small as the M..
Leica just needs to have a tiltable LCD to release heat..and make for a better viewing experience too..
And use carbon fiber or something similar for body for heat dispersement..and drop the 1930's metal brass concept..there are way better more flexible alternatives here..but will they do this..nope...

I am not impressed. Software issue on the camera is making it not usable. Leica has confirmed a new firmware update next week to address some issues but still this is unacceptable.

This was a very large purchase for me. These issues should have been sorted before release.

The only way video on an M would even "start" to make sense is if you have lenses with a large depth field. That's pretty much the opposite of all of my lenses. Also, the moving aspect of video is hard to accomodate with the focusing mechanism on an M. So for me, video in the first place was "just a marketing gimmick."

For me it fell into the category, "Oh, make your focus groups and make sure all needs are met. That will maximize those sales." A sure way to guarantee no real advantages for anyone. This also the reason why I don't buy new cars anymore. What is the good of a Porsche that my 80 year old mother feels comfortable driving?

And why brass Leicas feel much more solid than cameras like my puny Fuji TX-2 which are made out of titanium.

Exactly. Believe me this is not exclusive to Leica. That's why all mfgs have firmware updates.
If you want to be the first one out of the gate to own the latest device, this is the trade off. There may also be hardware issues, which is why I always wait on these things. Of course that still didn't help me with my M-E..
