M10 Specs Up

I just look at other camera makers, even makers of other items - Apple for example - who announce and have product to market in a reasonable amount of time (a month to two months) .

Leica announces and then we wait for 4 months..... :D

But like I said, at least people can save their money to buy the new M.
Cheers,
Dave

Plenty of time to contemplate a life with one kidney! :p

What is different here about this announcement as opposed to previous ones? Leica has always been a niche manufacturer--does this really matter if the camera does what you want, or would you rather buy from a manufacturer strictly because of volume?

What did your imagination think would be necessary to make this a happy day?

Just think of all of the things that Leica's competitors have done with their cameras that Leica refuses to do. No sensor cleaning, no autofocus, sensors of unknown quality, NO weather sealing, subpar high ISO performance, slow buffering - the list goes on and on. And to top it off - ridiculous prices. And yes, volume helps. It helps quality control and brings down prices. Those are not bad things.
Not a single new idea from Leica and many common features omitted.
During the days of the M8, there was little mirrorless competition for Leica. Today, they are outclassed.

In looking at the tech sheet for the M(10) I was surprised to see that they made the camera thicker. 42mm(M) vs 37mm (M9). Not that I could afford one I am disappointed in this. I was really hoping to see it get thinner to be more like a film M.

I agree. Leica seems intent on making bigger FF digital cameras, while Nikon and others are making smaller FF digital cameras. The new M weighs in at 680g, as compared to the new Nikon D600 at 760g. What? Is Leica trying to meet Nikon "in the middle"?

The M looks just superb---but is about 1/3 to big to make me mortgage the kids. But lots of L fans love it that way.

All in all, I'd say they "did it" :)

Well, given the choice of $5500 for a new M9 EQUIVALENT (M-E) or a used M9 for $4900, I'd rather buy new. unless the M9 was down to 4K or less, there's no reason not to buy the M-E.

well said. this is sort of where my thoughts are in terms of a potential purchase.

The two features I wanted were improved ISO and to fix that bloody shutter recock noise. They've improved the ISO performance, any word on the recock?

Before ANYBODY passes judgment without usage, I HIGHLY suggest you go ahead and watch this video if you haven't done so already.

It makes a world of difference to see it under natural, changing light, in the hands of somebody actually using it. Please watch.

One thing I noticed was just how BIG the camera gets with the EVF and the new Grip attached. Watch 3:00 to 4:00 on the video for size.

The M-E is going to nail M9 prices, for sure. This is great news for the used market. A full warranty, and the support that goes with it, and the ironed out creases, is worth quite a lot in my book. One has to wonder whether the M-E will just run for a limited duration like the M8.2 did or be fully supported for years to come. I suspect the former.

At this point I ill say a huge THANK YOU to Leica for not increasing the 'M' price over the original M9.

Very interesting products at very good prices ( for Leica ). I sat out the M9;
now I shall wait for the test reports and sample images before I jump in.

But if nothing untoward is discovered in the operation or images from the
Leica M..I am in.

Well done Leica.

Irrespective of it's M heritage it's a very nice looking camera by any standards. It's not tiny and likely now dwarfs an M3 (exaggeration) but the size looks good IMO and that EVF doesn't look like the 'wart' I thought it would! :p

personally i think the M10/Mwhatever is looking like a tool that working photographers/photojournalist could get into, outside of the price for a system of course.

all the bells and whistles seem a departure from tradition but these are things that are very effective when in use. it seems that Leica is on to the idea that a 'serious' photographer (whatever that may be), working in todays market must have a system capable of many tasks.

With the exception of the EVF though.. I used it with the Nex-5N, one needs to be very careful to not get any hit on the EVF, quite delicate in construction and also in protruding position. Even placing it in a bag one needs to take it off (so delicate in appearance, the socket too.)

I think its getting too big with all those accessories, the way I use my M9 is to supplement my DSLRs not to replace them, but I am impressed with how leica has introduced the ME and not alienated M9 and M9p owners. Maybe the M9 prices will go down a bit, but considering M8.2s are still well over £2000 still in the UK I dont think the price will drop that much.

Essentially, Leica brought out something new but kept the M9 on the shelf, they just changed the name so they could drop the price on it (ME).
