There is no need for an M10 if it doesn't have live view.

I just hope it's a circa 2013 LCD ('retina display' if you will.) And it should cost no more than an M9 does today, and the M9 should drop in price to about $3995 tops. 😉 But that would never happen as the just announced M9M would also have to drop in price.

I agree with Jaap and would add:

Keep it simple - improve the underperforming aspects (sensor - for those who need to go higher than iso 1600, write speed, battery life, LCD, shutter noise etc.). A Leica M is a simple camera that can be blazing fast and discreet. It is best with lenses up to about 90mm-135mm (I only need 28-35-50). There are many other great cameras out there if you need auto-focus, longer lenses, 10fps, video, iso that looks like a telephone number, etc. The Leica M is fantastic at doing certain things. Keep it simple, small and well built.

I have shot with M's for many years - no complaints. I've missed shots because I've not been prepared, can't fault the equipment. In 30+ years of shooting, I've had to push iso 400 b&w film to 800 only a handful of times - now with digital, I can go to 1600 with colour. Crazy talk, if this keeps up someday man will reach the moon!

Sadly, there's not much chance of Leica improving the price.

All I want from a Leica is rangefinder focusing (Preferably optically), and the form factor (That includes weight, right?) of the classic M cameras (M2-4, M6-7, MP). I think if Leica ever moved away from RF focusing Epson would step in because there wouldn't be any need for the CEO of Epson to abstain from the RF game out of respect. Or maybe Cosina would.


I see nothing inherently wrong with live view and video if it doesn't remove either of the above, because it'd mean photographers who are asked to shoot HD video on occasion would be able to and not have to haul around a Canikon. It'd also help in certain shooting situations. It's not like you have to use every function on your camera anyway, I know plenty of people who don't go above ISO 1600, because they'd rather not have a photo than a slightly grainy one. I don't know anyone who uses scene modes. Did anyone ever use the direct print button on Canon cameras?

Then again, I'm probably to Leica purists what new money is to old money.

Not really - and Live-view, optional EVF will probably draw in former R users and people who want to use the camera more universally, but on the M10 it will be a secondary option which many of us will not use that often. The same goes for video - it took me five years to discover my Digilux2 has video capability and I even haven’t used it once.
As for scene modes, Leica got such a negative response to their Snapshot aka S(tupid) mode that they would have to be extraordinary insensitive to market forces to develop that idea further.
Personally I will wait for Leica’s integrated EVF offering for my R replacement.

I suspect jaapv is right--live view and video will not assert themselves if we don't want them to, as on the Fuji X-Pro1. You could use that camera for months without noticing that those features exist.

I kind of have a hard time with what is cool with the digital Leica era. Almost any option would be accepted, live view, video ect but auto focus would be treason. I would think an LCD screen to be fine but live view, video or even reviewing what you had already taken unacceptable.
If live view is ok how about tilting screens, histograms, electronic finders and image stabilization? Who draws that fine line? Why not auto focus if you can simply turn the dang focus to manual? Once you open the flood gates of technology where and how do you stop it. Years from now the younger generation Leica shooter may demand it?

I do not see an argument here. Why must there be a limit to how far technology advances? Why should Leica draw a line on how many features they pack in, as long as it remains a rangefinder Leica M camera? You are a digital shooter yourself and have captured great photographs, so hopefully I am misunderstanding you.

The line of thought to prevent advancement is frightening and draconian. Simplicity exists in shooting film with mechanical cameras. No such limitations exists or should exist for digital cameras. If there was no digital, would people want film cameras to always use ISO 100 film? Would more advanced film cameras not exist if digital never came to be? Why is there a tendency to prevent improvements and advancement amongst intelligent photographers here?

That would have to be a given in order for me to buy one.

Hopefully Leica includes a menu item to disable the live-view button against accidental presses, and hopefully the EVF is an optional add-on which nobody is forced to buy if they don't want it. A little access port on the back below the hot shoe shouldn't be any more of a hindrance than the PC flash port on film M's, if it too is capped-off so dirt and crud can't get in.

Ultimately it's going to come down to whether there's anything else of interest to me, because if it's just those gewgaws I've got no reason to buy. Another stop of high ISO and a bigger buffer would be nice, but not if it costs me 4-5 grand to trade up.

Autofocus? With manual lenses without electric contacts and sized for an RF that leaves no space for motors etc.?😕Not treason, just plain impossible...

If this is not a fake the button bloat on the back appears to be quite a hefty minus. And the lens, if not camouflaged as well, is indeed strange. Weatherproofing?
