Here's the new combo in action: Tri-X at 3200 in Rodinal, wide-open. The bokeh of this lens is pretty hard: more like a Canonet than my Nikkor and Leitz lenses, or the Canon 50/1.2.

Indeed the OOF lights seem to be on the odd side. It would be curious to gather info about the lenses providing this kind of oof, let's say the Canon 35/1.8, CV 40/1.4, Summilux 35/1.4 ¿?, Nikkor 50/1.4, etc and compare their block diagrams so we could get a conclusion on which kind of designs cause this effect.

That said, it's a great picture anyway, and the foreground looks tack sharp, I guess it was wide open, no Merci ? :)

That indeed is a very sharp and crisp subject focus, not to mention great photo of the man.
 
tri-x pushed to 3200 in rodinal - i have to try that! did you expose at 1600 to boost shadow detail? how'd you develop?

The meter reading was 1/60 at f2 (actually 2.0.3, on a digital meter) so I was overexposing just a bit. 30 minutes in Rodinal 1+50.
 
is that the lens you got for like, 60 bucks?

it looks like shite, i'll give ya 75 bucks for it cause i'm feeling generous today.

It was $91, but since I'm so extravagantly generous myself, I'll be glad to take a loss.

It's really rough focusing through part of its range: I think it could stand to go to DAG for awhile.

Merciful I like your shot a lot! The background lights do reveal "ring bokeh" too, like the Jupiter-8; I've been thinking of it as "that Sonnar look."

Thanks, Doug. The next time someone gives me grief about the bokeh, that's what I'm going to tell them, too.

actually, that's neither the Sonnar nor the J-8 look, quite the contrary, since those two are known precisely for NOT having ring bokeh, but the smoothest flowing bokeh available...
I'd call this 'anti-Sonnar' bokeh ;)

This kind of OOF can be seen on Leica 35/2 (1st to 4th) 50/2 (Summitar, Summicron rigid et al) at a special high light condition.

are you sure that there isn't something wrong with your J-8?

SONNARS DON'T PRODUCE RING BOKEH!!!!

Sorry, but I had to shout that out ;)
I love my CarlZeissJena Sonnar 180/2.8, my various Jupiter-9 85/2, and my various J-8 and J-8M lenses, precisely for their smooth bokeh, and never ever ever noticed one single instance of ring bokeh with those!
Sonnars are widely known as 'bokeh machines', that's the main reason why they are still being used today, even though other, newer lens designs may be contrastier!

Bokeh or not bokeh, Merciful's portraits inside bars are simply great, I still remember the first one from him I saw, taken with a Canonet.
