M2, stiff (rewind) knob...

Hi,

I have a nice user M2 with which I take loads of photos. Love the camera!

There is a small problem though, in that the film rewind knob is pretty stiff.
The knob turns smoothly, with no binding or roughness but is pretty stiff, up until the point where the film has rewound off the take-up spool when it becomes much much easier.

Any ideas what the problem is, if any, or do I just need to toughen up my fingers?

Many thanks!

Hmm... If it gets very much easier when the film leaves the take-up spool, then the problem must be with the take-up spool!

(I am sure you have pushed the film release properly before rewinding...)

There is a pack of lamelles that gives the right tension when winding the film forwards. Probably that is dried up or jammed?

That being said, I somehow seem to remember that the tension feels harder than on other cameras. Partly due to there being no handle on the rewind button.

Try comparing to other M2s if possible, if not you might need a CLA. If it does not damage the film I would try out a few rolls though - seeing if it gets better...

I don't think there's anything to worry about. The rewind knob is quite stiff on my M2 as well. It's normal to feel a loss of tension when the film winds off the takeup spool, it's been like that on every camera I owned...

So just keep on taking pictures! (Don't forget to post them...) :)

How is winding? If that is also stiff, it is the cylinder with the sprockets that needs lubrication.
