M2 Strap Lugs

Youxin Ye replaced the lugs on my M2 in 2013 for $80 as part of a CLA...

As suggested above I'm reading between the lines of their email to say; we could do this, but we're really not very enthusiatic about doing it. Find somebody else.

Hypothetically, if I were to ship the camera to the US from the UK what kind of taxes etc would I need to pay to export and import after work has been done? Would I need to pay VAT on the value of the work done or value of the camera when it re-enters the Uk?

In the meantime the M2 can live in the bottom half the the eveready case with its strap attached to the case.

Another option would be to buy a donor eveready case and undo the stitching and use as a template to make a new case from leather and strap attached as above.

Quite unbelievable nobody makes a half case with the strap attaching to the case directly anymore.

Luigi Crescenzi in Rome makes one :

But it will cost you... well, ahem, much. 😎

Exceptionally beautiful but bulky...... definitely cheaper to get new lugs

To be fair to Newton Ellis - they are snowed under with work for Leicas and they have offered to do it if you can find lugs, and it does appear to be a big job.

Technically it's only the service that is taxable - so you will pay VAT and import duties on the cost, including sadly shipping. It's not huge, but check the repairer in the US is geared up with the correct export codes - otherwise you run the risk they will value the cost as the value of the camera! (it has happened to me on something non-camera related).

I clearly missed that case on the Luigi website, very easy to do as it is certainly not the best or easiest site to navigate.

Do you really think I can purchase new lugs, have the camera disaembled, old lugs drilled out, new ones rivetted and camera serviced for under €225, especially with shipping and VAT charges to pay if I need to ship to the US?

You might try contacting some Leica repair people in the USA and see if they would sell you lugs. It's a long shot but worth a try.

When I sent Sover Wong my F2 from the US to the UK and back there was no duty etc, but I remember needing to fill out a long customs declaration so there would not be any trouble.

Malcolm Taylor will replace the lugs the correct way. There is a chance of splitting the casing if the job is not done correctly.
