LOL, Ted! I guess they weren't impressed. My Spotmatic was new in 1970, maybe one of the last. There are about 4 of us (including Brian) here on RFF who have button-rewind M2's, but these earliest models seem to sell for LESS than the later lever-rewind cameras. I guess we could have a button-rewind serial number contest to see whose is oldest! Hmm, mine's 9350xx 😀
Wow, Brian and Tajart beat me out for "Most Ancient M2" award, with Frank coming along close behind! 🙂 Brian, you've mentioned yours comes from "the first batch"... what are the limiting serial numbers for first batch, or does that distinction belong to all button-rewinds?
Pure dumb lock on my part. I bought it on Ebay with a blown rewind for $430. Sent to Essex and $188 later it came back perfect. Took two months, the gears were back-ordered. I find it amazing that parts are supplied for a 1958 camera!
My FED-2 is... (I'm shaking with excitement as I type this...) #9939308. That's only 60,692 FED-2's away from 10000000, which is much closer to a winning number than I've ever been when playing the weekly Lottery!
Frank, my rewind button must be kept pressed while rewinding; it doesn't latch down. This camera seems to be from the 4th batch, dated 8/6/1958. My Pentax K may also have been made about that same time (intro May 58), first model with (semi)auto diaphragm.
