I purchased an M3 and it has been working properly but the 1/1000 th speed was not opening correctly. I took it to my local repair place here in Houston and he said he could correct it without taking the top off. Well this past weekend I was on the 22nd floor of a hotel and taking pictures at 1/1000 and I could see the shutter was not working and the picture was dark on the left half of the shot.
If I send it to Sherry she will charge about $250 at least and I was wondering if there is anyone else who would repair it? DAG would probably take too long and I have reading that another is (Li), I can't think if his name now. Anymore suggestions and should I even worry about 1/1000 of second?

I have sent my cameras to Youxin Ye, and have been very pleased. He is quick, does very good work, and his prices are very reasonable. Many here use him.

shooting is a virtue
I would not worry about 1/1000 sec personally. Then again, I have become quite used to the top shutter speed of 1/250 sec on my Hexar AF, so 1/500 seems like a luxury to me.
If you shoot faster films in bright light, or if you need to open up a bunch during bright light (thereby warranting 1/1000 shutter speed), it seems like an ND filter would be cheaper (and more effective) for your troubles than having the camera repaired...

youxin did my M2 with a similar problem, plus a foggy VF for about $100 less. He threw in a new Aki skin for about $15 and, not counting shipping, he turned it around in less than 48 hours. I understand that Sherry and DAG are both worth the extra money if you're facing this something for very complex, but they are slower than youxin. for a CLA you should be in good hands.

In nearly 40 years of having cameras with a 1/1000 sec. top speed, I have seldom used that setting; and I used the 1/500 top speed of my Rolleicord just as infrequently. All depends on what you photograph and the speed of the film that you use. Do remember, though, that a problem with one speed can mean that the other speeds also may soon give trouble.
