Hi all

I'm new to Leicas, and am doing a whole pile of research - which one tends to do when it's all new to them :)

Anyway - I've just bought an M4-P in brilliant condition from a friend of mine, with serial number 1621778 - which according to http://cameraquest.com/mtype.htm places it within the 15th April, 1983 batch.

Now - according to http://www.cameraquest.com/m4pm6.htm mine should have been built prior to the stage where the swap to the newer zinc header and M6-style flush glass took place - so should it, by all rights, have a brass top and recessed features?

May I ask - is this what you'd refer to as "flush" glass?

Well yours is clearly one of the later M4-Ps with a zinc top and the smaller 50mm frame lines. I believe the SNs in the 162xxxx range often possess characteristics of earlier and later M4-Ps, but yours is for sure one which has the later M4-P characteristics. It is simply a question of specimen variation.

Here are some pics of my M4-P and it has the earlier characteristics.

Yes, that is newer, M6 style top plate with flush window.

Edit: Thomas was quicker and more thorough. I blame my iPhone typing. :p

Thanks for the quick replies gentlemen!

Hmmm... so it's an anomaly of some kind? I'm not sure whether this is good or not! LOL :)

If you happen to have an M4-P with M6 windows, please email me the serial #, as well as stating whether its black, chrome, "Panda," single or duel sync posts. I will be equally interested if you have a M4-P in the serial #'s listed below which is NOT M6 windows.

Thanks, Stephen Gandy

Does anyone have Stephen's email address, or is this info not really interesting to anyone now?

EDIT: Found it - message sent, thanks
