I sent my M4 away to Germany for a rangefinder calibration. I have been quoted 90 GBP, which I was willing to pay. However they have since come back and said that for 300GBP they will do a full service. I am a bit shocked by the price, but the dealer in the UK that is handling all this says it is worth it for a authorised Leica repair centre service. My M4 is in excellent condition and has never been repaired or serviced before, am I being taken for a ride or is it worth it? What are my alternatives?

I've no reason to suppose there's anything amiss, but for U.K. work, CRR Luton have done several cameras for me including some tricky repairs, and they alway come back better than I expected.

Peter, the chap who runs it is factory trained and has a great deal of experience.

google their website, if you are interested.

It seems everytime one sends something to Solms it is 300 GBP or 500 Euro. I would vote for Peter at Luton, too. I used him myself for an M3, including shipping it was still a lot cheaper. He could be very busy so might ask upfront for service time. A complete service should be around 150 GBP.

Wolfram

The Australian Leica agency estimates 4 hours work at AUD$85/hr plus taxes for a CLA, which equates to US$300.

Your M4 is about 35 years old. It's probably time for its first service!

I had a CLA done at Kindermann in Canada on my M4 and the price was compareable to DAG and nowhere near 300 GBP. A CLA is not a bad idea on a camera that is the age of M4s especially as a daily user.

I've just sent my CL to Peter at CRR Luton for a service and overhaul. Had a really good chat with him on the phone - clearly knows his stuff.
