I recently saw a Pentax M42 to Leica M39 lens adapter for sale. The ad claimed it could be used to mount a pentax m42 lens on a LTM body. Has anyone tried using such an adapter? If so, is it usable, especially with a wide angle lens to infinity?

Yes, quite useful for lenses 35mm or shorter. Strictly scale focusing. There are two types of adapter around: one with a plain mount and another with a "ledge" within the adapter which pushes in the aperture stop pin so that the diaphragm closes to the selected f.stop.
With the plain adapter only preset lenses or those with A/M selector switches can be used.

No problem at all with infinity focus.

The only drawback I see is that the typical M42 wide angle is larger than the Barnack type cameras.
