M42 wide angle lenses on FSU cameras

Hi guys, read a previous post regarding using M42 lenses on the M39 mounts of FSUs through an adaptor. As far as I can make out some members have had successes with wide angle lenses but 50mm+ is unrealible in focusing.

I was thinking of getting a wide M42 lens (as there are hundreds on ebay and all very cheap!) possibly a 28mm maybe even wider. Will they focus properly on my FED3 and FED5? Or will there be a certain distance where the DOF just won't work? 😕

Damn blast and double damn, just realised all the cheap adaptors on ebay are for M39 lenses to fit on M42 bodies and not the other way round! Why is the world so cruel!!! The Macau guy is selling his adaptor for £35!!!

Are there *any* wide angle lenses one can get for the M39 mount?

There are Russian Wide-Angle lenses, the Orion 28mm for one:

Not Cheap, the Voigtlander Cosina lenses are competively priced with it.
But, another may come along at a better price if you are patient.

You can get some cheap thrills using T or T2 LTM adapters and any T-mount lens. I've fabricated fisheye viewers from door peepholes (available in several viewing angles), fabricated a 28mm finder using the finder assembly from a $1 thrift shop Vivitar 'almost-disposable' plastic 35mm and use the auxiliary viewfinders of Yashica/Petri/etc rangefinder auxiliary lens sets with other lenses in the 35mm range. 85mm? - spring for a very reasonably priced Russian viewfinder. Are they as good as Russian glass? Yes, they are - the T Mount lenses were produced by every major manufacturer . . .

There is also some outfit on the Small Dark Island that fit anything to anything but I believe was even more expensive. I think they are in London. I found it by accident linked from an astronomical site but I have lost it.

Schneider Optics have a T-Mount to LTM body but I don't know anything about it.

Note that most M42>M39 and all M39>M42 are just adapter rings for bellows and do not focus properly.

Canon Lens Mount Converter B allows Canon FD [and FL?] lenses to go on LTM. My only experience with this converter was one afternoon using a Canon FD 1.8 50mm on a Bessa L, focused at infinity for some landscapes. Worked fine. There are quite a few FD/FL lenses around. I think the Converter B has been discontinued, but I purchased one maybe five months ago for around $30 US. Beware - I've seen them go as high as $90 - $120 -- huh?

I got me one of Gandy's M42-on-L39 adapters. Pretty pricy but works flawlessly. I inherited an old Meyer Optic 30mm some years ago, together with a Praktica MTB5. Used it for a short while before getting an Eos 3000. Never used it after that... until a couple of weeks ago when I screwed the lens with the m42-on-L39 adapter with an L39-on-M adapter onto my R-D1. The lens turns out to be really nice. The whole setup is rather big but I like it nonetheless. A few weeks from now there's a big photo gear market here in Holland (anyone going to Doesburg on 21/8?) and I'm already thinking of getting one of those Russian super wide angles (12mm anyone?) or fisheyes (8mm anyone?). 🙂

Just a comment on the tmount to ltm adapters. Since the tmount lens registration is 55mm in addition to the larger size of slr wide angle lenses the combination of adapter and lens to my fed produces a very "nose" heavy ensemble! That and the loudness of the fed shutter precludes its use around people in quiet environments.

It does however, help with my gadget addiction.

Ditto on the Canon Converter B. The Canon lenses are of course a bit larger than the LTMs. On the Zorki 1, the lens (50mm) actually blocks part of the VF. I bought the converter with the idea of using it for wider angles at infinity, but as I said, have used it little. It seems like the aperture was a bit of a hassle as well when attached to the converter.
