m5 or not m5

Big? Run a roll of film through a Hasselblad. Then run a roll of film through a Pentax 6x7. Then pick up Bigfoot & Bubba. Feels like a couple wee P&S cameras. BTW, the M5 is the same depth and height and only 1/4" (6mm) longer than a Canon VI-T.

It's all relative.

lennon said it better; 'you don't know what you got till you lose it'.

It's a Leica so it's a great camera. It's really big though.

I was seriously considering an M5 (Wayne/Venchka likely remembers that), primarily because everything I read said the meter and shutter speed dial were brilliant, plus it is perhaps "undervalued". Eventually I was able to handle Frank's M5 (which I do believe is now "Bigfoot",) and I was shocked. That extra 10mm of height IS big ... for me.

The issue is not the absolute size, it is the relative size ... as in, relative to what you are used to, what feels "right" in your hand.

I shoot the Olympus 35SP and OMs, plus some other rangefinders. The 35SP and OM, in particular, are very close to an M2/3/4/6/MP in size and feel, though not as "dense" of course.

So when I picked up the M5, it was quite startling. Would I reconsider? Mmmmmmmmmmmmm ... maybe. I have an Olympus 35LC which I rarely shoot, primarily because it is more like an M5 than M2/3/4, 35SP or OM. Could I get used to it? Probably ... I'm pretty comfortable with the Konica FS-1 and it's a way different feel than an OM.

But it's also not such a big investment. So what I'm saying is, try it. Get some sort of return privilege and shoot it for a week or so if possible.

Hey Wayne, send me Bigfoot and a 50 for a trial! 😀

M5 is heresy, blasphemy and may God the almighty forgive those who use this abomination 😀 but its a nice camera overall despite its odd shape

Seems only satisfied m5 users ever respond to such threads, which makes the value of the thread questionable, since there are few or no alternative viewpoints.

Let me give some alternative views.

The m5 is big, fat, heavy and ugly. Maybe no effect on shooting, but one should be aware of itw.

It uses mercury batteries, hard to get and expensive. Converting is an expensive option. I wonder about meter accuracy after conversion.

If you need a meter, I'd suggest getting a zi for the same price. You get aperture priority, a more accurate metal shutter, smaller and lighter to boot!

If you don't need a meter, I see no reason to get an m5.

In my view, the two-lug version was a mistake, which is why later versions came with three.

Nope. I bought Bigfoot from Ray Harms in Arizona and this forum. 😎

Let me think about that loan........................😉

Real men carry an M5.

I suffer from Excess System Syndrome. I know the cure-Massive Equipment Shedding. I just can't bring myself to part with anything. Dumb. But true.

I don't think there's any mass conspiracy to only have positive comments... I just think a lot of people don't have hands-on experience with the M5 and those that do tend to like them.

I've handed my M5 over to many people for inspection who have used other Leica cameras or rangefinders but never actually had an M5 in their hand.

A Leica is just a camera. An M5 is just a Leica camera. If it works for you, get it. I don't have one, but I haven't heard there is anything mechanically, electrically or optically wrong with them. They just aren't shaped like the rest of the Leica M cameras. Big whoop.
