Just wondering if anyone here has advice for taking off the back rubber of the viewfinder on an M6 Classic? Can you even do it? I've searched here, and pretty intensely on the net but have been unable to find anything explaining it. Do I have to take off the entire top plate to get at that area?

Thanks in advance, apologies if it's a ridiculous question that's been answered here before.

Not a ridiculous question at all. If you look at the Leica M sub-forum, you'll see that I raise a similar issue. But, while I don't know about the M6, I'm quite certain that the rubber on the M7 does not come off. I guess that means that the top has to be removed. Not something I would attempt.

The eye-piece (including the rubber ring if there) simply un-screws, no need to take the top off.

To clean the front window, you do need to take the top off.

The you-tube movie is nowhere to be found anymore. Some member here (Peter?) still had a copy.

Roland.

What about on an unsealed MP? My five year old MP's viewfinder (the side where you put your eye) has a bit too much dust in and could do with cleaning a touch. How can I do this? I know the M6 and unsealed eyepieces are different but dont know more than that.

Roland,

Are you saying that the eyepiece, specifically, of the M6 "simply" un-screws? Because I can assure you that applying only finger-tip torque, the eyepiece of the M7 does not un-screw.

I will call Leica later today to settle the question and report back.

Leica NJ confirms that the eyepiece does not unscrew; the top has to be removed to clean the interior of the eyepiece.

Put away that wrench.

Well, Harry, all I can say is that it worked for both my M6 classic bodies, and both my M4-Ps. In fact, M6 classic and M4P eye pieces are interchangeable. Unless somebody used glue, of course 🙂

Use the proper clamp. If the eye piece has a rubber ring (some do, some don't) be careful not to destroy the rubber.

There are multiple RFF threads about M6 eye pieces falling off, being replaced by eye pieces ordered from DAG, etc. Google is your friend.

I guess that settles the question, at least for the M6 and earlier models. So, the question remains, was I mislead by Leica NJ, or is the M7 different? Hard to believe the latter. What a pita! I'll investigate further.

And thanks for the information.

Harry

Edit: It appears that the MP and M7 are not screw-in eyepieces, unlike previous models. The answer is here. Damn.
