M6 half case advice?

Hi everyone. I'm looking at getting a case or half case for my M6 to give it a bit of a protective covering. I've looked at Luigi's half cases, very nice, and the eveready case from Leica. A couple of questions:
1) If I get the Luigi half case with the screw, is the screw easily removed for use without it so that its one less step to remove the case to change film? I do like the idea of having tripod/monopod compatibility with the case on but would like to be able to easily use the case without the screw on occasion.
2) Is the "upper half" of the eveready case removable so that I can stow the damn thing in my box of other junk? I really only want a half case.
3) Are there any other options I should be looking at?
Note: I frequenlty shoot in situations where I don't have the option of setting anything down and any dropped item would be lost forever so want to keep the system as simple as possible for ease of film changing.
Thanks for any helpful input/ideas. Cheers,,,,,,

1) I don't see why using it without the screw would be any problem whatsoever. The Luigi cases use little button straps on the side to keep it on your camera, not the screw at the bottom. The only purpose I can see for the screw would be to keep crap out of the tripod hole.. which isn't much of a concern.

You can also get Luigi to custom any other holes you want in it like for the dial at the back.. or rather he can also make sure there are no holes in the one he sends you.

2) The upper half of any eveready case is removeable. Watch what you get if you decide on the Leica cases. I have a Leica case for my M6 and so does my friend. I have an M6 TTL and he has a regular M6. Both cases have about.. 2-3cm on the bottom which, I assume, is to protect the camera from falls. What it does is it makes the camera look like a square when it's in the case. Ugly as ****.

Hope that's helpful.

That's helpful, thanks. I was afraid the screw was secured to the case in some way that would make it difficult to use the case without the screw. It sure is a nicer looking rig than the Leica case.

i would email luigi and ask him directly about the case.
it's a new one for him i think.
I will, but I thought I'd get some input from end users first. And also see what other options people might know about that I hadn't found yet. Thanks all.

if i read the site correctly, the cases with the screw flush with the case is relatively new. i doubt there are too many in use yet.
it looks like the screw comes out but then you have to worry about losing it and when not in use on a tripod, the case will have a hole in the bottom part. probably not a big deal.
i like the cases w/o the screw but then i don't use a tripod much.

Since the Luigi cases are hand made I guess he can customize them. Why not ask him?
And I will, of course. Just thought I'd solicit some opinions on other options first. Thanks for the info?!

September the 18th, 2006...

Dear RFF members, as promised, although with delay, here some pictures
showing my special Stainless Steel "tripod" screw fitted on the case bottom,
and showing also how it may be easily removed: Ciao, Luigi

Hello Steve,

Thank you for considering also my cases ! 🙂

Be sure: the screw, my special Stainless Steel "tripod" screw that
can be fitted to the half case bottom, is easily (but only voluntarily)
removable. I mean that it is enough for the user, when he doesn't want it,
to "unscrew" it a while more, just gently pushing it from the inner case
side (when the case is empty), and the screw will come out.

Then a 18mm hole will remain in the case bottom, but it will be almost
completely protected (inside it) by a tiny round SS layer.
I will try to make and post explicative pictures of that in my webpages.

Ciao to all ! Luigi (thank you, Chris !)

PS: Jorge, your RFF software is terrific ! I love the possibility to may
"edit" our posts, correcting any possible mistakes, and/or adding any
new news !!! Probably I will be able to post the REAL picture of a
Leica M8 there, on September the 16th... Grazie.

I got my case for my M6 from Luigi just this week and I love it! I took it out proper for the first time today. It fits the camera perfectly. I opted to get the cut out in the back so I could see the ISO dial and had Luigi put the worn finish on the brown leather case and strap. I can't say enough about this case or dealing with Luigi. Top notch!

Hi Luigi! 😀

I had this same question and did a ton of research on this. I chose Luigis case. I cant comment yet because I am still waiting for it but I am sure it will be great because I couldn't find one bad comment about it. I am really excited to get mine soon.

You can't go wrong with Luigi half case or even "full" case. I have both and they serve excellently. Quality of leather and processing is very good. The padded grip on the right side of the case adds nice ergonomy in comparison with using "naked" camera.

PS: It was the very Luigi case that caused that I met a German Leica fellow (also a participant of RFforum!!!!) here in Prague on Sunday. When he noticed me, his first words were: "Luigi case"! Were not L. case around my neck probably he didn't notice me at all. ... so not a Leica but a beautiful case is what counts. 🙂))))))

I use the bottom half of an Leica eveready case on my m6. The top and bottom of the case are held together by a sliding snap-like connector, and can be separated from each other.
The Leica case doesn't have a screw, it uses snaps and leather tabs around the strap lugs. The older M cases for m3, m2 etc, have a bottom 1/4" or 3/8" screw, and the top and bottom are connected together with a rivet.
I sure would like one of Luigi's cases, though.

I just got my case for my M6 yesterday. All I can say is fantastic. Fits like a glove, feels great, smells great and makes holding the camera a joy. Thanks Luigi!

I got a full case from Luigi for my M7 and didn't realise 'till I'd had it for a couple of months that the top separated from the bottom via a very ingenious keyhole slot in the lower half.

How embarrasing .... I was just about to email Luigi and ask if he made a case that separated in this way when I discovered it!

😱
