M6 Mini-Rant

My M6TTL seems pretty indestructable, but for hammering nails into concrete walls I always use my (t)rusty Leica R3
Seriuosly: the worst thing that ever happened to one of my camera's was a M6 (one of the first, so "classic" I guess) I had to jump to avoid being run over by a bus in Jo'burg, dropped the camera in front of the wheel, th bus ran over it: bump,bump,bump. There was a very small dent on the top cover edge, the rangefinder was slightly misaligned,the lens cap was crushed but the lens unharmed but the camera worked flawlessly for the remaining four weeks of my holiday. The repair bill turned out to be about 2000 guilders (about 800 Euro) a huge amount at a time that the camera cost about 4000 guilders.They replaced the top cover and the rangefinder. Happily I carried insurance, which required me to report the matter to the police. So I wrote a polite note, explaining this was for insurance purposes only. Months later I received a registered letter from Johannesburg, stating that
" extensive inquiries had been made" but that they had been " unable to locate the culprit" .

m6=m6 in my book. early on chug pointed this thread in a good direction, to stephen gandy's explanation of the variations, and perhaps first use of the "classic" description to distinguish between the m6 and the m6ttl.
i mistakenly thought there were only four variations of the m6 but stephen has listed some 24 variations which you may have already looked at if you followed chug's link; i include the link to the variations here: http://cameraquest.com/m6dif.htm
my own m6 is one of the early numbered variations with the leitz roundel sans bumpers. it is very cool and so sweet to use. end of rave.

I apologize for the uninformed "brain/brainless" references. Not being a Leica enthusiast (just a shooter) I'd assumed the TTL was the first with internal meter.

I think Leica made the mistake by naming it the M6TTL, since the M6 already was a TTL. I'll bet there are people who have paid more for the M6TTL thinking that it had a meter and the M6 didn't. That's a real shame.

The TTL is smarter, however. Bigger brain.

My new M6 classic feels like a rock. It's lighter than my Yashica Electro 35 but it feels much much more solid!
