M6 or MP??

Ok...

Quite a lot of answers and I think I understand both "directions".
Of course the M6TTL is enough to make good pictures (mhh overkill maybe...)
But I do enjoy the tool. The flare issue is clear, 200$ upgrade and you're done. The smoothness is quite subjective or at least doesn't change nothing to the camera ability to take a picture. But then, does the camera color, the red dot changes the ability to take pictures? and people can become really emotional on these...
Why would people buy a super expensive eveready case for a camera while it only disturbs by making the film change longer and flimsier.
Apparently there is a large group of people (of course I'm included) out there who do have an irrational relationship with their equipement. That doesn't mean they are no photographers. The advice "cut the BS, go out and shoot" is only half right, as I see it. Of course, the most important thing is photography. My real nightmare is to see my negatives damaged, not my gear. But still, I have a soft spot for a certain type of gear.
Let's put it that way: I always admired that old friend of mine that could date the ugliest girl around, just because of her personality. I just can't.
So my wife is beautifull. Would I continue to live with her so many years based on that only? I guess not.
In my situation, the reason I'm not "going out shooting" is much more due to my work and family than cash (and I'm not "rich"). So That's what I decided: I have some superfluous gear. I'll try to turn it into that upgrade to MP that is so apppealing to me. (part of it is already in the classified...)

P.S. Please don't tell my wife I compared her to a camera.
She thinks she is in the lens category 😉

You are completely rational in your irrationality! I agree w/ many things you say. Have fun shooting, whatever gear you use.
 
If you had said you were a gear junkie from the start, I would have skipped the rational argument altogether.

Take it from me (a recovering gear junkie) - buy the MP. Only then will you completely recognize the beautiful irrationality of it.

Does anyone else have a sense of discontentment whenever they own "the best?" I'm less content with the best than I am with something just below the best. I guess I need the moderation.

For what its worth Ive got a M2 and M6 and the M2 is noticeably smoother.

What i was trying to say is that all of this almost constant and needless comparing of smoothness of gears and what said gears are made of has no effect on how your photos turn out.

If you want to/have to have different camera body's because of things like framelines, motor drive couplings,self timer, longer FR base ect then thats one thing.

But wanting to change a perfectly good camera for one that will do exactly the same thing (at a big cost) when a (relatively) cheep upgrade will suffice seems stupid and even more so if someone is doing it in the name of 'smoothness' and nothing else.

My opinion.

Pete, I'm surprised you haven't figured out the 'nature' of the RFF Forums. As you can now tell it's about equipment. Photography is in the Gallery.

See you there and cut yourself slack. If you never saw this thread you wouldn't be disturbed by these preferences being discussed "in the open"

Not exactly. At least not for me.

The way I see it, the problem with owning "the best" is that there is always something out there just a little bit better (or different, if you will) to stay completely satisfied. Similarly, "the best" periodically comes out with something new - and the perception is "newer is better" - especially in the world of electronics.

The fact is, newer is rarely better, but only "different" - a discovery realized only after the "upgrade" outlay of thousands of dollars is made.

At the end of the day, owning "the best" is completely predicated upon being content with what you already have.

I think that what may turn me on with Leica gear is that they are indeed some kind of absolute best. I just bought a nice SS M3 because it's simply the best IMHO for shooting a tele, and I don't think thatwill change soon. I use the most basic Nikon black, thin, strap because it's the best, and I don't feel I need any fancy looking red leather strap.

OTOH, I love my IIIf and it's certainly not "the best". I also love shooting my black III because shooting a 75 years old camera does something to me.

I have a watch that I like very much because it's simple, sturdy, and automatic. Is it the best in keeping time? certainly not.

I think I may put it that way: I like any object that is high quality, and puts me out of the crazy race for the latest gadget the companies wants us to buy because what we have is sooooo obsolete...
