M6 Purchase

With M pricing or valuations changing so quickly I was looking for feedback on a potential M6/lens purchase. I am considering purchasing a late model black M6 .72(serial # 247...) with a late series 50 summicron (serial #382..)and 90 elmarit (serial #346...). The current owner stated he has shot a couple of rolls of film since purchasing it new. He stated that body/lenses are LN. He also has all the original boxes except for one of the lenses box. I have read there were some film counter problems on some M6s. does any one know if this model year experienced this issue? The owner is asking $2350 for the package. Any and all feedback is appreciated

I paid $1725 for Late model M6 and late model summicron 50. With all boxes and papers. I don't know how much that 90 is worth...

I bought a late (242xxxx) M6 classic for under $900 a few months back. It was graded bargain because some full-of-himself poser decided if he painted all the white logos black, it would be more "discreet" (maybe the subject would think he was holding a portobello mushroom up to his eye). It took me a few coats to fill the white back in, now it looks at least "excellent plus".

I'm thinking that it's a good deal if the gear is like new. $1200 for the body, $600 for the Summicron, and $600 for the 90. (I don't really know 90mm prices though.)

Why do you think the guy deserves to be called a "full-of-himself poser"?

M6 Purchase

Unfortunately I do not have the opportunity to "road test" the body/lenses. As mentioned my biggest concern is the asking price. Based on the research I've done it appears M6/lens pricing is all over the board! Even when one tries to compare bodies/lenses in similar condition. It is hard to determine what is a good package price. The current owner has stated that he is the orig. owner and had run 5-6 rolls of film through the body and then put it away a few years ago. Based on the serial numbers it appears to be a late model M6/90/50 therefore should not need a CLA at this time.
I was considering a m6ttl but currently have an older M6 (ser. # 174..) and would prefer to keep standardization. Lastly are ther any M6 model year/ser. # I should avoid. I have read there were film counter problems in 1994/95. Thanks again for the feedback.

Gunner not having an M6 (I started with the TTL) I would just say get the newest serial nr. you can. The last serial number of a regular M6 (actually it is listed as an M6 SW - no clue what the SW means) that I can find is 2470300 made in 1998. Looks like the s/n of the one you are prospecting is in that range. 🙂 Welcome to the forum BTW!

Sounds like a good buy to me. However, see to get a warranty from the seller. In other words, would he take the camera back and return your money if within the week you have a problem with it?

Otherwise, the 50/90 combination is a good start. And that Elmarit has a good reputation too.

Go for the M6 Classic! The M6 TTL feature is not worth the added weight/bulk. Have you seen images of the gear? If it's as-advertised, it's a fair price.

I agree. It sounds like a fair price. And if you don't need it all, you can part out the package. I am sure there are people here who are looking for a 90 elmarit in good condition. Like me 😉

The bulk that pbjbike speaks to you may find attractive, but not the weight. If you have big(ish) hands the M3 thru M6 cameras may seem a tad small for you. I was at a camera fair over the weekend and had my first experience of M2, M3 and M6 and they are a bit too small for me.

Thanks for all the feedback... As Frank mentioned I currently have a M6 with a older 35/2 Summicron and a 50/2 DR I have been shooting with for many years. I've been thinking of adding a second body and a 90 Elmarit for some time. When I saw the add for the M6 package it seemed like a fair price considering I paid 2k for my M6 body in 1990! I have decided to go for it providing there is a return policy regarding stated condition. Once again thanks for everyone's response.

I think SW is short for schwarz (black)
