I recently was in a camera shop where I spotted an M6 classic with 72mm viewfinder. The camera was almost mint. They were asking $1099.00. Should I be suspicious, or should I jump on it?

That is about the pricing that I've seen locally too. The big auction sites and online retailers usually beat local shops out by a considerable margin, but apparently not always on "premium gear".

I was just thinking of picking it up and taking it to an independent repair person to verify all was good. There is a 14 day return period.

Why would you be suspicious? It's the going rate basically.

I payed $1080 at a camera shop in Seattle for my M6, a mint condition classic model with .72 VF

M6 prices seems to have gone down the past couple of months.
I remember buying mine here used just the body for over $1200 last spring.
Im seeing the M6 TTL going for around 1200-1400 now

Good morning,
It depends on what you mean by "mint". On today second hand camera market, especially for Leica, bodies and lenses, could priced from simple to double following the state of the goods. A black paint or chrome M6_non TTL _ is currently negotiated between 850-1000 USD according to his condition. If it's flawless that means no choc or signs of essesive wear, close to the new one _ yes it exist _it can priced from 1050 to 1300 USD and higher even !
Prices of these negative cameras will not fall . The digital camera, yes !
If the one you discovered is "mint", and you are happy, don't pass the occasion , buy it and ask the store to give you a guarantee of 6 months, so you need no test in a hurry !
The M6 is "the" tough camera. you will not regret !
Two years old M9 lost 30% of its first price _19 years old M6, no ! and its resistance over times _ below :

Where are you guys finding these working M6's for $1000 USD? When I see them they are $1500. I have been eyeballing them for months and would have gotten one instead of the M3 if I had found one at these prices!

at german e-bay

I checked M6 prices (i am looking for a 0.72 myself; have a 0.85 and would rather change) on german e-bay.

In the last month there were 45 pcs. They are on average 850 (M6) and 1000 Euro for (M6TTL) . With 1.33 exchange rate, that is 1130 and 1300 US$.

I've used the other eBays before, but I haven't looked there for an M6. I guess I could. However, my last German ebay experience was less then awesome so I am kind of soured on it at the moment.

And kind of bummed that I got the M3 even though I've wanted one for a while when I should have held out for an M6.

That is one gorgeous M6. However it's also $1,500 for the body alone. Which is $500 over the $1,000 USD people here say they see them going for. Which kind of reiterates my question as to where people are finding these $1,000 M6's that work. :D

Just bought an M6 in a store for about $1200 (converted from Yen). That store is always kind of pricy, but it gives me peace of mind to buy there instead of from an individual. The camera was in great condition. I think the M6 is one of the most attractively priced Leicas at the moment.

I actually got my M6 for $1200 about a year and a half ago and it was in mint condition. Owner even offered me his VC 35/1.4 for $400 as well.

Seems like the normal price these days.

That M6TTL .85 for $1200 sounds pretty appealing to me -- even without using flash, you'll get a camera that's likely newer than the .72 classic and has a nice VF if you don't shoot wides.

I am kind of looking for a TTL one myself, but if a nice working classic were to cross my path again at the right price I'd jump on it. I've got a Bessa now and it is doing the job for me that the M6 would, but the M6 is my goal.

I kind of hope to stumble across one at a local thrift shop, flea market or garage sale. I've rarely found good cameras at these before, but you never know.

Until then, I am socking tiny bits of money away for the M6 just the same. To be prepared for the day I do find one in my budget range.

I don't know about the others here but I just got my first Leica M series body recently so I have no habits or "by hand/by feel" instincts yet.

The closest thing for me is my Bessa who's shutter speed dial increases the speed clockwise. And I always look at it and turn it, never assuming it's right on. That is my only habit, as I've shot too many images with lens caps on or with the shutter set wrong without paying attention. :D
