Keith,
On a purely value for money basis I would be unhappy with that. Ok you had 15 months out of it but for the sort of money charged I personally would expect a lot lot longer. In the UK even if the item is out of warranty it can still be claimed that said item did not provide the service life for the purpose which it was sold for. This is why most extended 3rd party warranty policies are deemed on the whole a waste of money. I think the M8 standard warranty is 3 years? not sure, but if it fails before the half way point I would demand my money back or a direct replacement. I have nothing against the M8 as a camera, indeed I would love one, but what I am against is the fact that the product does not appear to be living up to the investment made. I know this is a sore subject on here but if consumers refused to buy the product then sooner or later Leica would sit up and take notice, fix the issues on new cameras, replace defective ones they had already sold and thereby renew our confidence in their products.
If I was going on a once in a lifetime trip I certainly wouldn't be happy just taking an M8 with me. Don't flame me please but I would put much more faith in a Nikon or a Canon.
With film, I trust my M's completely. Yes I know there have been failures but they're a rarity. Until Leica's digital division get their act together I'm sure there will be a lot more unhappy owners.
