M8 Firmware 2.014 released

It is weird that the firmware update is not available on Leica AG's website, but available on the UK Leica's site?

It's the update for users on the 2.005 firmware right?

 I thought you are always redirected to a "national" site. I have the update from de.leica-camera.com. There you find it under photography > M8 > Updates

No matter, I downloaded the update from the UK site anyway.

Like Brian Sweeney, I too, felt that the full-resolution review loads a little faster than before.

Or is it the placebo effect at work?

2.005 to 2.014 upgrade also fine here. havent noticed yet any difference in camera output or operation thats worth mention.

I wrote to Leica Technical Support a couple of days ago regarding the internal optimisation of the Firmware. Here's my question and reply :-

Following the release of the Firmware Update 2.014 for the M8, I was wondering if you could provide a bit more detail about which Internal Processes were Optimised?

-------------

In response to your question, there are no quantifiable examples of a process being optimised, other than the camera as a whole operating faster, smoother and with fewer glitches.

The processes that have been optimised are coding processes, these are running in the cameras CPU and dictate how the camera behaves and operates at a fundamental level, this code has been subtlety changed in the firmware update to remove areas identified over the cameras lifetime as problematic, and introduce new code where it has been deemed necessary by Leica’s electronics technicians.

I hope this answers your question and please feel free to reply with any further query’s you may have.

Thank you.

So it would seem this is a more far reaching update than first thought. I have to admit that since updating the M8, there is a certain something about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Smoother, more refined, more enjoyable maybe ? For sure the picture quality has improved ??

Thanks for posting Leica's response. Sounds to me like they have made the operating system more stable (not that it was unstable before) and perhaps have maximized resource use efficiency. I doubt photo IQ has been affected, but perhaps speed, stability and battery life have been incrementally enhanced.

Yes, the M8.2 and M8u with new shutter does not allow you to "roll-Back" to an older version after loaded.

As he said :D

But just to chip in, if anyone from Leica is reading. The UK web site, and perhaps others, does say this is an M8 update. "We" know it applies to M8.2 & M8u but they (Leica) could/should be clearer is stating that for those of a nervous disposition.

Just updated to 2.014 on my M8.2; as mentioned, the update was quite quick compared to previous updates.

Before coming here to read about others' experiences with the update, I immediately noted an improvement in the responsiveness of the camera on a software level — playback and rendering of files on the LCD is noticeably faster.

I love that the company is showing commitment to past models like the M8/8.2, despite the huge success the M9 has been. They could easily 'forget' about the M8s out there, but it's admirable to see a company in our day and age doing something like this. It might be a minor update, but it's nonetheless hugely appreciated and to be commended. Thanks, Leica.

I have noticed a smoother navigation experience.

Surely, because some are color-blind it doesn't mean that some colors don't exist. I wonder if they go "bah! Red and Green are just a figment of your imagination!"
