Apologies if this question has been asked before: Can anyone recommend a compact shoe-mounted flash that works in TTL mode on the M8, apart from the SF24? Thank you

Nothing else works. You could take your chances with a Metz, but it's not worth it. Metz seems almost incapable of properly implementing any digital TTL system.
The M8 TTL system is accurate. And the SF-24D is the most elegant solution, particularly coupled with rechargeable CR-123As. That said, the double flash from the Leica is the most noticeable of any camera I have used (it's not the stutter of a Canon - it's a pop-pop). It also induces a long shutter lag.
I would recommend getting a simple automatic flash that uses Nikon-style pinouts (so the ready light comes on properly). The Konica HX-18W and Nikon SB-20 are the two cheapest ones. The Nikon in particular has five auto modes, does bounce, fractional powers down to 1/16, has built in telephoto and wide diffusers, and does all of this without having any irritating nested menus. The Konica flash is very small and has two auto modes - and in a lot of situations is all you need.

Dante, There is an LFI issue that discusses two Metz flashes, with full M-TTL functionality using the 3502-M5 SCA adapter. I would have to look the exact types up. It seems to work rather well, the only hitch being that the camera-mounted one won't fire its small secondary flash in GNC mode, and that the bracket-flash will, but is a bit of a pita ergonomically.
Having said that, I get the best results of all with my old Metz Z-2 flash in automatic mode on the 3502-M4 adapter.Unfortunately it is melting down and has not much longer to live, so I am looking for a similar replacement, I have seen an old Metz MZ3.
Philipp - you need a SCA 3000 compatible flash with 3502-M4 or M5 adapter. The 351 won't show flash-ready, nor switch the camera to sync. On the other hand, any flash with a hot shoe will fire, of course.
