Sorry for such a remedial question. I've had my M8 for three months now and it's superb. However, I have just noticed with the illumination window I can feel the ridges when I rub my finger over . Is this correct or is it missing a glass cover. I'm sure it was smooth when I last had a fondle.

Don't worry, your M8 isn't missing anything. The illuminating window should have the ridges on the outside like most of other Ms. (I think M3 is the only M with smooth window on the outside)

I think some of the M2 had M3 style window.

It's a Fresnel lens. It directs the light at the proper angle, so it falls onto the frameline mask.
