M8 Infrared Picture

I just got my new M8 silver and with a Hoya R72 filter took the attached picture. (The filter is 49mm with a stepdown ring to fit my 35mm Summicron) I have a B+W 093 filter (39mm, no stepdown required) on order which is the same as the 87c filter (higher cutoff point, 780 nm vs. 720nm). I will post a shot when that
arrives.

The rangefinder is the best Infrared camera (besides a TLR) because you don't look through the lens to take the picture. This camera is very sensitive to IR (only lose 6-8 stops with R72 filter) and hand held shots are possible even on cloudy days!

By the way, I LOVE this camera.

Nice IR shot. I haven't used my M8 yet for IR work, but I was working in IR with a modified Canon 350D. You can get rid of the red cast and produce either monochrome B&W or false color schemes of various types using the channel mixer. Here is one example:

It is very important when doing false color IR conversions with the channel mixer to first start with a raw image, carefully do a neutral white balance before converison to tif or psd and then do a the channel mix (simple red/blue switch works well).

Ah-yes IR. I've been experimenting on the M8 for some time now. Two examples. Both with the Summaron 3.5 cm 3.5 goggled with 092 filter:

I received "old" Fuji f401... as broken... but the camera was fine, and the charger was bad. I was thinking of making it an IR camera, but I'm not sure about it. Do you have some tips?

PS ...or even... remove the lens and mount m39 or m42 adapter... to try to use it as tele-nstain (factor is 1:~6,5)! 😀

After the excessive IR sensitivity of the M8 was made public, I always wondered how good would the M8 have been on IR.
Of course you can't focus using the RF because of the focus shift, but I guess scale focusing and a reasonably narrow aperture should do.

Also (I know this will invalidate the warranty) has anyone tought if there is a way to get rid of the (almost useless) hot mirror in an M8, and using it always with the appropriate filter either as a normal camera or as an IR camera?

Without the hot mirror it would make an awesome IR camera, and normal operation should not be a problem since you are going to use a IR block filter anyway.

I couldn't wait, so I disassembled little fuji...
It was relatively easy, removed hot filter... I now just need to find a little piece of glass to use.

You will need to get a piece of optical glass the same thickness as the IR block filter you removed. You could also use an IR pass filter if you want the camera just for IR. Check here for filters:

Only with CV 35 2.5...
