Is there a reason why the M8 doesn't have a cloth shutter, like the MP/M7?

You can get higher shutter speeds (& sync speed for flash) w/a modern metal shutter. They're also significantly more accurate than the traditional all-mechanical shutter in the MP, which is the same design as the M3, etc. (the hybrid electronic-mechanical shutter in the M7 is more accurate). Finally, they're more durable; e.g., you don't have to worry about the sun burning a hole in the curtain (I can tell you from personal experience that it does happen in the real world).

My friend brought a MP and an M7 to work today. I was surprised that the M7 was quieter in the MP, I wish the M8 was that quiet.

Yes, the M7 is the quietest of them all. I can accept the louder noise in the M8's shutter (most of the noise is actually from the cocking mechanism), but a lot of people evidently agree w/you, which I assume is why the M8.2 includes a slower, but quieter, shutter.

True, my only real complaint w/my Fuji GW670II (other than the pull-out lens hood) is the loud exposure "mileage" counter mechanism that easily drowns out the leaf shutter.

Many of the above arguments are true, however the real reason is very banal and simple: a cloth shutter takes up too much space, they had too much electronics, battery and SD card to fit in.No choice....
