M8 + Nocti Pics :)

went to the camera shop with my nocti and SD card and shot some nocti shots. all shots are wide open, iso 160, raw files converted on CS2. happily the raw files don't need a patch to work on CS2. sorry i only had like two minutes to shoot away, so pics aren't great... BUT... my experience with M8 and Nocti combo is awesome! i was at first alittle concerned about the thickness of the M8, but shooting a few pics with the nocti made me realize that the thickness really makes for a better grip on the camera, especially with a heavy lens like the nocti. the shutter and rewind is smooth and quiet. only draw back i found was the preview. its slow...

i have reposted the pictures processed on CS2, with its default settings, taking out any of my own post-processing. that should make comparison more unbiased, i hope 🙂

Is it just my eyes or are you guys ignoring it: the focused areas are pretty soft. Did you manage to USM the images at all or are these untouched? If you have set the camera to do no sharpening, the images need to be USM.

Did the Noctilux have the coding? There is no vignetting in these images! I'm wondering whether to ship my Nocti in now before the M8 arrives or whether to wait and try it out. If this is an uncoded lens I'll save the money.

No- not your eyes, but we know these are resized JPGs for the web and frankly, I prefer the normal digital softness here to sharpening artifacts.

There should be less vignetting because the sensor has a 1.33x crop factor.

I would waite ... the Noctilux does not vignette on the R-D1 either .. the dark corners are lost becuase of the cropfactor on the R-D1. The same will happen on the M8 .. besides because of the microlenses the M8 vignettes less than Leica itself expected! Just wished my Noctilux vignetted a bit more .. i like that effect 🙂

Personally, I don't think these pictures need to be sharpened. They could be, but I like this look!

A couple of these pictures look soft because they are slightly out of focus .... not unusual if you want to do some "quickies" with the Noctilux wide open 🙂

but it's also easy to resize a jpg and keep it sharp. VERY easy. I know the M8/Nocti has to be capable of better sharpness than this.
And maybe it's just me, but i find these images more attractive in color.

and arthury is right about the 1.33 crop- should get rid of most of the vignetting.

Again .. do not drop conclusions about sharpness ... 6-8 quick snaps with a Noctiux wide open will not result in sharp pictures .. who knows where the very small focusplane is??? Probably not at all where you are judging sharpness: the letters on boxes and camera

thanks for the replies everyone.

these images are soft because i was so excited to take pictures with the M8 and my Nocti, that my hands were trembling 🙂 they were all around 125 or 250 shutter speed, but my hand kept shaking like a crack addict 🙂

if i had more time to shoot, i think these images could have been much sharper, but there was another dude waiting for me to get off the camera, giving me the evil eye, so i just shot as many shots as i could and these were the sharpest.

no photoshop work except, changing to greyscale for the b/w and adjustment in Levels. no USM.
