M8 off to Germany

Well it had to happen my M8 is going to Germany for a bit of a sensor repair glad I bought it with a years warranty!
I started getting a missing pixel with a nice green line🙁

I am sorry to hear that. I hope they will fixed it fast for you. Did you buy your m8 second hand or new? I keep wondering myself to get a second m8 as a backup just in case something happens. But then again I do not know if that makes sense money wise.

Sounds like a dead/hot/stuck pixel, I'd reckon they will simply map it, probably no need for changing the sensor. I wonder if that couldn't have been done locally?

Maybe they can at the repair shop its one of the best known in the Scotland, the repairman told me there is no leica Uk anymore?

Yes, it was in the news recently that Leica UK would be closed down. But if your repairman didn't offer to do it himself, then probably he doesn't have the means to. I hope you have a second camera! 😉

Sure, Leica UK REPAIRS are being sent to Solms. But that's rather a long way from closing down Leica UK.

I bought my M8 second hand (very little use) two years ago now, used it almost daily for several months before sending it in for the shutter and display upgrade along with the Vulcanite. It's now a U8.2 with an additional 12 month warranty.

I bought my 2nd hand M8 about a year ago also from a store. I immediately noticed similar problem to yours, but worse. I had several lines.. Anyway, since it had short warranty from the local store they had it sent to Solms for repairs. Over all it took about a month and the camera came back fixed and cla'd. I also received complimentary 1 year factory warranty from Leica.

Though I admit it was pure pain to send my "new" camera away during the first day and being without it for a month, I'm very happy with the service I got. And most importantly with the camera. It's been working flawlessly ever since.

The actual repair document stated ccd pixel fault as the cause and cost without warranty would have been 320€.

The exact same thing happened to mine, and it was fixed by Solms.

My M8 was sent off to Solms last week for the same thing (one week before the Passport warranty ran out!).

I think the only difference is that you send the camera straight to Solms rather than to Luton who then send it on. I've had a couple of repairs done since 2007 and in both cases the work was actually done in Solms.

I can wait a month thats not too bad, does annoy me a bit that I've not had it that long but on the other hand when it comes back from leica it should be as good as new with any problems fixed where as if I had a refund I may end up with another one with problems.

That was my logic as well. And because the camera has been working brilliantly ever since, I for one don't see any reason to look like I've had sour grapes.

I also think that people should remember these events when they buy 2nd hand gear from private persons. There's always a certain amount of risk involved. Which is exactly why I bought mine from a reputable Leica dealer. It may have cost a little more, but in the end it was worth the extra to have the warranty.

Hopefully your saga ends as well as mine did. Stay strong, it's worth the wait!

Nothing to me as I got it with warranty, I must say this is the only digital camera I've ever had (I've had a lot) thats ever needed fixed that was not caused by me. Even after the hassle I still think its a great camera and with the 28mm summicron it makes a great all day carry camera when I'm not working.
