It's the image number in HEX. So you have to calculate it to decimal. And if you don't know how to access this exif field, download exiftool and use
exiftool -ImageIdNumber <filename>

ok thx for correction, didnt remember the HEX part.
for those who don't want to use scripts and command line, should Lightroom and alikes show it equally well.

the hex to decimal is easily calculated with the calculator if you use it in "sience mode"

The File Names produced by my M8 are sequencially numbered, and carry over between SD cards regardless of formatting.
Is there a reason why the filenames are not considered good (not best) indicators of number of actuations?

Brian, the numbering can be reset to '0' in the M8 menu. You can also set it up so that it resets to '0' every time you change the memory card.

Got it! So- buying used M8's- check EXIF. Own one from new, okay for use if you set it up correctly. I read on LUF that someone had an M8 stop as the numbering reached 99,999 and the numbers HAD to be reset for the camera to continue operation.

On a mac, either of these two programs should show it to you:
simple exif viewer
http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/
xee
http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee
Both should give you the hex value, which you can then convert.
I'm sure there are other programs as well.

Brian,
Partially correct. The sequential numbers only go to 99,999 for each folder. The photos are numbered and go into a specific folder number, ie: folder starts out at 100LEICA, so at number 100,000, they would be placed into 101LEICA starting at 000001 through 99,999 when it would then be named 102LEICA etc.
I hope I said this right.
