A few months ago, my M8 shutter fell apart (Blade falling loose and hanging) and I have been using my backup M8 since then. I am now getting around to sending it to Allendale NJ (I live in Allentown PA close by) and am wondering if they need to replace the shutter, would I get the old one or the upgraded shutter even though the upgrade service is no longer available. Hopefully the shutter will not need a complete replacement, but it might, so what are my options?

I wonder if it would be economically feasible to replace an
M8 shutter, given the prices these days...

A few hundred would be fine

As long as it does not go past $600 Ill be fine. I shoot black and white mostly, and I am in no mood to blow money on an monochrome. I have 25 years worth of Leica lenses in my collection, another M8, an M6 and an M4-2, so I am committed to the M system. I do like the X-Pro1 but I still want my M8's for the rangefinder experience!

About two weeks door to door, if I recall. It was slowed a bit, though, because I was out of town--and reach--for a few days when they tried to contact me. Other plusses? They check everything out (e.g., sensor), and you get a one-year all-camera warranty.

Hi - Which replacement shutter was it; the original 1/8000 top speed, or the 'M8-2' 1/4000 shutter?

I had my M8 serviced by Leica Solms two months ago for a shutter fault, and they replaced it with the 1/8000th shutter.

Hi since my shutter failed and like yours, they will probably be able to replace it, would I be eligible for the M9 upgrade option? I sent them an email but no response yet.

Probably not. As far as I know from the numerous threads over at the Leica Forums, the offer is only applicable for those M8 owners with "unrepairable components" such as the LCD coffee stain issue, as there are absolutely no spare parts available.

Although we are talking Leica, here, the shutter on the M8 & M9 should be the easiest to find parts for since it's a Copal, like that in the Hexar RF, Kyocera Contax G2, (current Zeiss Ikon?), etc. For comparison purposes, I had a shutter failure in my Hexar RF similar to the OP last year & it cost about $250 (including shipping) to get it fixed by Essex/Camerarepair.com. At that time, they quoted me $350 for a complete shutter replacement.

Not really. It is a special one made by Copal for Leica and is not interchangeable with other cameras.

Well, I'm not sure how unique it is compared to other Copal shutters (for non-Leica cameras) as far as parts, but isn't the shutter essentially the same for the M8/M9/ME?
Not really. It is a special one made by Copal for Leica and is not interchangeable with other cameras.
