No. the M8 has different shutter blades.

There are plenty of spare parts for the M8, only LCDs have run out through an unfortunate chain of events, reason Leica has put a replacement/upgrade program into place for M8s needing an LCD repair. There are no spare parts available for the M8?

I had my M8 shutter replaced by Leica New Jersey in April. It cost $475.
I sent them an email and they quoted me $1200 for a replacement. I asked Leica Singapore and they quoted a similar price. However when I asked the official Leica service center in Hong Kong they quoted me a price in the vicinity of $475. A bit odd to me. And in all options I believe that they're replacing it with the 1/8000 shutter

Probably not. As far as I know from the numerous threads over at the Leica Forums, the offer is only applicable for those M8 owners with "unrepairable components" such as the LCD coffee stain issue, as there are absolutely no spare parts available.
Both Leica NJ and Singapore said that I'd need to have the unit sent to Solms to have it evaluated by a technician before they could give a free estimate on the upgrade cost. So it's either I take the HK option ($450-475) or send it in NJ and wait for them to tell me how Mj it costs to upgrade to an m9/m9p. Lots of work to get to an estimate

Interesting. I sent mine directly to Solms and paid 40 EUR for the mandatory estimate (they wouldn't repair without it)

To anyone interested here's what I gathered from the options for the repair of my M8 shutter:
- replacement cost ranges from $1200 (NJ) to about $400 (HK) and this is for the 1/8000 original shutter
- the M8 to M9/M9P is only available for M8s with defective LCD screens. Other problems that are still repairable do not make the M8 qualified for this program
- for those who qualify for the M8 to M9/M9P program you would have to first send the camera to Solms for them to assess how much top up will be required to upgrade

Isn't the M8 shutter the same one as is in the R8/R9 bodies?

Two things: First, as noted earlier in this thread, I had my M8 shutter replaced by Leica NJ for $375 (and that was in April). Second, I hadn't heard of an M8 to M9P upgrade. Interesting ... Any idea of much it would generally cost?

Ramosa,
You got an even better deal I you got the shutter replaced for $375. The emails I had with Leica NJ said $1200 that's why I opted for HK which is closer to what it cost you to replace the shutter on your M8.
There's an upgrade offer for M8's with busted LCDs (can no longer be repaired) to top up for an M9 or M9P but the price is determined by Leica. I think I saw some post on LUG forums that had the ranges and they were based on the camera's age. I don't think they announce this openly on their site and I'm not sure if all Leica service centers know or openly share information on this. I got the most details in this through Leica HK followed by Leica SIngapore and the least through Leica NJ.

I hope not $1,200. Hello X-Pro 1?
I hope not $1,200. Hello X-Pro 1?
That $1,200 price is scary! At that price, I would be better served buying an X-Pro 1 as a backup! Maybe here the X-Pro 1 would become my primary camera and my M8 as the backup. Leica needs to be consistent and realistic in their pricing for this.

Gxr?
Gxr?
Heck, I could buy a GXR M module too! And cheaper! $1,200???
Ill bet the GXR M would cost around $300 or so if it needed a new shutter.

Hey, I just checked my records. It cost $475 in April (not $375). Pardon my mistake there. However, I would still call Leica NJ and check why the price would have gone up from $475 in April to $1200 now! ...
