M8 small case for the rucksack

I have the Leica {edi}Neoprene Case with the TriElmar on, spare battery and SD card fits in,and pop it in my backpack, or I put the collapsible 50 on the M8 and use one of those Leica "service bags"which is basically a pouch with a pullstring on the top and slip it into my pocket. There are any number of small video carrying bags which will fit the M8 as well. Visit your local camera store.

Try a large lens wrap - I use one for my iiia when it's going to get stuffed in a bag. I have a medium one which can also (just) manage a M2, a large one would be perfect.

However, make sure and feel them first - the amount of padding varies.
 
I'd wrap it in a soft hand towel then put that in a zip-loc bag just to be safe but then I can't ski for toffee. Whatever you do well padded and watertight is a must.
 
Maybe it is my padding - I find that when falling on the camera ( which thankfully happens very rarely ) the one that is dented is me- not the camera. These Leica's are tough- the bag and padding are more to prevent scratching amd wet than to prevent structural damage to the camera.

Yes but padding could not hurt. I always carry my M8 in an over sized foot sock in my backpack. I'm not a fannypack or a specialized camera bag kind of photog. I'll watch this thread carefully as I too am looking for a solution that allows me to place my padded and hence protected M8 in my backpack without undue heft or bulk- does that nifty red dot cordura case fit this bill?

Mario, I can't really help you with a bag, but I ski often, and I can tell you that I've tried carrying my M2 with a collapsible lens in a jacket pocket and it's cumbersome. I was always worried about catching an edge and ending up falling on the camera. No worries for the camera, just my spine and ribs! I also found that I don't really take that many photos up on the hill. Now, if I carry any camera at all, it's a small Olympus Stylus. It easily fits in my pocket and it would probably break befoe my bones would. Some of this obviously depends on your style of skiing. I usually ski with my teenaged kids so they're not interested in taking in the scenery, they just want to go up and down the mountain as many times as they can, which translates into as fast as possible!
 
Leica makes a Neoprene soft case for the M cameras. It's ideal for bagless protection from bumps and dings. It's also basically weightless.
 
Zing and Optech also make generic neoprene camera gloves in different sizes. I have one, I think it's the small SLR from Zing, that fits my M6 w. lens so I expect it would fit an M8 as well. Cost was around $20.

BTW, in re the term "rucksack", anyone happen to know offhand what a "ruck" is?

"ruck" comes from the german word "Rücken" which is in english "the back" and "sack" means "bag"

I disagree; I would not step into the first lift without my M8 (before: Digilux2) and I tend to take loads of photo's The mountains are so beautiful - especially the Dolomites where I always go. It may be a difference in style of skiing. In North America ski resorts tend to concentrate on one or a few mountains with a large number of scenically similar runs. In the Dolomites we have an interconnected area of 1250 km's of runs and over 450 lifts, taking in dozens of mountains. Thus one tends to make a different day tour every day, opening up new vista's and photographic opportunities at every bend.

Be warned, however, that it can be mistaken for a cosmetic bag:

If you're not embarrassed by the form factor (which seems to be a problem for guys for some reason) it's what you're looking for, albeit probably a bit overpriced. I chose it because it fit my camera exactly and was the quickest thing I could find to get the camera in and out of.
 
ThinkTank Photo make several fanny type packs with structured padding designed to fit a camera body with lens attached. There is also room for additional items.

I just called A&A at (212) 989-1252. They have a few of these left and when there gone there gone. I also ordered a silk neck strap (comfortable, storng and light) an a battery older that attaches to the neck strap that is just big enough to hold one SD card.

A&A also has another small bag that's great if you just want to take an M with one lens and put it in a backpack and not have to hassle with a 'real' camera bag. I've used it with lenses up to the 75/2.0 without a problem.

They're also good for holding 2 M bodies (comes with a foam separator with velcro) for storage in your closet etc.
