I'm planning on getting an M8 within the next couple of weeks but have one question. How do you know which updates the individual camera has had? Also, are they any that should be avoided?
Thanks

On the menu, there is an entry for the current firmware. Also, I have not heard anything about a problematic version (i.e., one to be avoided). I use 2.005, the most recent.

In case you mean hardware updates:
If the camera got its shutter upgraded the fastest shutter speed will be 1/4000s only. The new sapphire glass covering the LCD screen will be more scratch resistant than on the unmodified M8. So if the screen has scratches it is probably the original one. As I do not own an unmodified M8 I cannot say how the new bright line frames are to be distinguished from the old ones just by looking at them. To sum it up, if you really need 1/8000s as fastest shutter speed, avoid the shutter upgrade but all others are fine.

If you buy a camera with upgrades the seller should be able to show the Invoice or an upgrade certificate of Leica where the details are shown. Compare the serial number of camera and invoice or certificate.

Ah, perhaps, my bad. I thought the poster was referring to firmware, not shutter/screen/etc.
