I purchased a new M8. Finally......... the question now, can I use Canon EX flashes with it? I do not use too much flash, but it really makes a different to be able to fill in some flash, specially if it can be bounce......any sugestion!!!

I do not have Canon but I use both on camera and off camera Nikon Sb800 and it works fine. Other than much larger, it is better than the recently acquired Leica flash. In fact very regret to buy that now after comparing the result.

Be ware the voltage but Canon seemed famous for not accepting high voltage.

I have 2 Canon EX flashes (220EX and 430EX) and neither of them has an auto (electric-eye, sensor, whatever you want to call it), so the only way they would fire on an M8 is full power. I'm not sure about other Canon flashes. Whatever flash you use, if it isn't SCA-TTL compatible (SF20, SF24D, or a Metz 53/54 with correct module) then you'll want it to have an auto sensor or at least variable power, otherwise you'll need to divide guide numbers and change apertures depending on subject distance.

Get an old M or MZ series Metz flash which can take SCA adapters. Those are quite compatible with the M8 (albeit on manual-auto, not TTL) and cost next to nothing. The results are superb.

If you are on a budget then look for a Vivitar 3500, I measured the voltage on mine at about 8v, has been safe to use on my Pentax DSLR and have been using today on my M8 and working nicely. Has a built in sensor and is ok for general use. I also managed to get a module to use off camera from ebay, with the sensor still on camera which is handy.

I have been using the Leica flash made a few years ago for the Leica CL camera.. Use it manually works well. Good £40 worth.

No ..

I use a Contax TLA140 in manual mode and it works fine. It can be found second-hand for very cheap, and it's very compact (fits in a shirt pocket). There is no worry about it balancing on the M8 or stressing the flash shoe like a larger, heavier Canon Speedlite.

I have the Leica SF58 and was puzzled that the pictures came out very overexposed, even with -0.3 EV set on the flash. Auto mode worked flawlessly, and I reckoned any flash will work. Save your dollars.
