M9 and Mac...

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum but...

I'm having trouble with Aperture, which is constantly crashing since loading files from the m9.

I'm a terrible digital newbie, is it likely that my 2008 black Macbook is too slow and so constantly crashing? Or something else too look out for?

It now seems to crash constantly whatever image I try and open: old film scans or raw files from today...
 
Well, a 2008 Macbook likely will be pretty slow with Aperture. It shouldn't crash of course, though. Are you running the latest version of OS X and Aperture?

How much memory does your Macbook have? It shouldn't crash if it can't get enough memory, but no software is perfect.
 
Are you having problems importing or is aperture having problems opening your work flow? Have you tried opening these files in a different app to see if its specific to aperture or if its system wide?

Please let us know what version OS, the amount of RAM, and which version of Aperture youre running. Would be helpful to peeps trying to figure this out.
 
I'm running 10.5.8
It says it has 2gb memory...
Now aperture is completely broken. If i try and open the adjustments panel for any image at all it immediately crashes.
Have I lost everything?!
 
Import has worked fine, the files appear fine, but when I try and do anything it crashes...

I used M9 raw files yesterday and it was ok. Slow but ok.

I imported 70 odd files just now, and then crash after crash...

i assume that you do have a legal version of aparture so have you tried it out to import pics from a different camera?

you forgot to mention your aparture version 😉

I have the same spec Mac Book Pro and same version of OSX. Aperture 2.1.1 runs fine on my system. Do you have enough spare hard disk space?
 
the only other thing was I imported those VSCO presets to play with earlier, but they worked sluggishly but fine this morning on other raw images....

Here's what I'd do:

Shut down computer.

(Im not home in front of my computer but sending this from my iphone) On restart, reset the PRAM. The key combo to do that is Command Key (apple logo left of space bar), the key left of command key (I think Alt), R and P. Hold all of these keys at the same time while the machine starts and wait for it to try and restart 3 times then let up on the keys.

Go to Disk utility and run the disk first aid.

Restart the machine and try and run aperture again. If you still have a problem the. I'd remove Apertures preference file located in your user Library Preference folder. Restart and run Aperture again. If that fails create another user account and log in as that user and try to run Aperture. If that works you've got a problem with one of the other preference files that Aperture is looking for.
 
Your processor is fine but, you will want to instal more RAM especially with relatively large M9 RAW files. I have an older MBP with 8GB RAM running A3 with snow leopard. It is almost as snappy as my Later i7 with Mountain Lion and same 8GB RAM.

Also…
….try and minimize the number of files you load into each project.

…. work in pre-view mode as you view and cull your keepers down this is simply by toggling the letter P. By doing so the files will be of dominated quality and unavailable for editing. It does make pre-viewing and culling much less of a burden on your memory.

…. store Masters on an external after editing and saving. Once you have saved edits for final output, move the masters to a BU disk. This also will save memory and make Aperture run more smoothly.

For files the size of the M9's, a OS 10.5 2008 Mac with 2GB is going to be very slow at best.
I upgraded from a OS X 10.8 2009 Mac with 8GB of RAM earier this year.

It was fine for M8's 10MP files, but the Fuji XPro1's 16MP files made it slow as molasses.

Hopefully you can get things up and running, but an upgrade is likely in your near future if you want to do much editing.
 
Really? Oh No.

I suppose that may also be at the root of the crashing.

QUICK FIXES:

If this version of Aperture has been running on your system since you got it, then its not a compatibility issue. Its looking like its most likely the lack of RAM and probably the lack of storage space. Before you do anything, check the amount of free space you have left in your hard drive(s) You will want to make sure that the drives have at least 10% of the total storage space for the system to run properly and then 3x as much space available for each Aperture project you are working on (i.e. if your project has 50 RAW images in it @ 24mb each, then you will need approx 3.6GB of free working space for the cache to play with).

If space isnt an issue, then the next easy and quick step (without actual trouble shooting info in front of me):
- Run disk utilities and repair your permissions
- Reinstalling your Aperture so that it will overwrite any messed up prefs it may have

LONG TERM FIXES:

- Max out your RAM, you can have up to 6GB in your machine. its easy to install, and RAM is cheap these days. Theres no reason not to max it out.

- Get a bigger HDD. if youre low. When working with RAW, your gonna need an EXT Drive or a bigger INT Drive. SSDs are getting cheaper and cheaper these days and they make quite a difference when working on large files.

- update your OS to the lastest version that will go on there, which I believe is Lion (10.7)
