I have a M9. I would ditch Aperture. You really need to update your Mac OSX to 10.6.8, Snow Leopard at the very least. I did it to run the newest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. Follow the instructions on line and you will be ok. I have an older Mac Pro Quad Core Intel. I also bought more ram. All I did was buy more time, maybe a couple of years, before I'll need to purchase a newer computer. Everything is good.

Like others have said, expand the RAM in that system to the max, update to the most recent OS X that can run on it, and fit a larger drive (or SSD plus external hard drive). That will solve all your problems. Optionally move to Lightroom 4 if you so choose, although I know a number of folks who prefer Aperture 3 for M9 raw files. (I prefer Lightroom.)
M9 raw files are large and require lots of ram and disk space to work with efficiently.
For my raw image processing, I run a latest generation Mac mini with 16G RAM, 1T internal drive, and i7 Quad Core 2.6Ghz processor. I have all the image files on external hard drives, only the LR catalog folder is on the internal drive. It's super fast and does a terrific job. That's about a $1200 computer, plus keyboard/mouse/display/external drive costs, but well well worth it for any kind of serious photographic work. And it's simple to set up and use.

Resetting "Parameter RAM" (PRAM) does not lose any of your files or data. It just resets the computer's logic board and some (not all) of the non-volatile on-board chip settings to the factory defaults.

Resetting PRAM is an operating system reset and will not affect your Aperture Library. The Disk Utilty will fix your system file permissions to ensure the OS file structure is working properly. But whenever an application is crashing every time you do something it's lost a link at the system level to files its looking for to work. That can also be a flawed preference file the app uses to run.

Well I've tried some of these things.
Still getting the spinning wheel and then crash when I try and do anything to an individual image. Aperture is broken.
So depressing! Guess I need to take the macbook into the apple store?

And I can't access any of my old files in aperture. this is a disaster!

Try deleting the Aperture.app application file (in the Applications folder) and reinstalling it. DON'T delete any of the .aplibrary files.

There may be more going on here than just Aperture. It may just be it was using Aperture that the problem surfaced and I'm thinking pending hard drive failure.

Free hard disk space could be the issue. You may not have room for the virtual memory files once you launch Aperture.
In general, you want to start looking to upgrade your hard drive once it's half full.

If you bought it via the Mac App Store, you just run the App Store application and click on the Install button. Easy as pie. And you'll get the latest version too.

I got it from apple store online, but can't seem to access the account record far enough back. And of course I have the e-receipt, but not the activation key!
Booked an appointment to go to Apple store, not free till this Friday. Hoepfully they will be able to help me. Aperture still jammed. I removed the files from the library, opened aperture and it was empty of all my folders. Still crashed when I pressed the adjustments tab. Put the folders back, crashed again.
Looks like my m2 might have to be listed soon to cover some computing costs...

On a side note I too am having Mac nightmares
My imac from 2004 has finally crashed...lost all my photos
But i take solace i have all my Negatives & flickr...
Will have a new hard drive put in & will be properly up to date mac animal wise... lol
as well as buy an external or 2
I will not invest in Aperture again since it Recently
Locked all my photos and i could not gain access to them again..
.will buy into ACDsee ( having a big Sale thru tomorrow with their software)
Or the baby simple photo elements 11
