m9 and the rd1

the m9 is really a loud camera. the manual shutter advance of the rd1 is much, much quieter. rd1 is better at 1600 (particularly b&w). aside from that, m9 all the way.

The M9 still costs around 3 times more than a good R-D1 so I'm not sure they should even compared. They are leagues apart. If you shoot wide and don't mind finding a nice 28mm, the R-D1 can be a wonderful apprx 35mm FOV camera. The files hold themselves up very well, despite being pixel-width smaller than those from an M9. If you don't print big, need something super quick, or don't mind shorting on 2gb cards, are careful not to bang your camera around, the R-D1's a good choice, otherwise look for a different kit. The M9 is not a substitute. I'm selling my R-d1 now, wish I could afford to keep it.

The M9 has any worthy features, including shooting your asph series of lenses FF. On the rebound market they are in the mid $3K making them a worthy consideration.

Of course not. The reason why they have to be, in spite of all the differences, is because there ain't any alternatives ('cept the M8 and the M 240).

consider this…

if one wanted a 'true' old fashioned rf experience in a digital package these 2 cameras are the closest thing to it…right?
rf focussing…manual lenses (as in no af), interchangeable lenses, shutter speed dial, aperture rings, iso dials…
the m9 has the advantage of a 35mm lens acting like a 35mm lens while on the rd1 there is the need to multiply by 1.5…

price is certainly pretty reasonable on both these days…repair situation is similar depending on what needs fixing…

what do you guys think?

I like the RD's ergonomics much more than any of the digital M's.

It would have been a world beater if Epson had marketed it properly and kept it updated with new sensors.

You have already had and sold many RD's. So its time for a M9.

Joe you have had 2 Rd-1s so you already know what they are capable of. What you really want is an M9. The prices are good now so just jump in & go for it. If it's not for you then you can always sell it & get your money back.

Hi.

i´ve had teh epson, the m8 and m9.

For your question i´d say handling the epson is the mos old fashion style. The fact you must cock the shutter yourself gives a total different feel to it.
On the other hand the´digital M´s can´t be compared to fully automated cmaeras so they have also a old fashin feeling to it.

But in a more personal view i´d say ther´s nothing about old fashion oon these cameras...i´d say the fully automated ones give me things i don´t need and don´t want.

I´d love to see a newer epson camera...even an apsc would do, but with more resolution and w/o AA filter.

I had the M8 and the Epson and compared them: the leica was more compact, but the epson grip was better: the leica viewfinder was brighter; the epson had less shutter lag and cool dials and neato shutter cocking lever; but the M8 had better build and only 1.3 crop; I liked the flip screen on the epson.

I decided to keep the M8 because of the IQ and because my 28 cropped to 35 and my 35 to 50 and my 50 to 75.

If you're considering another RD1 get an RD1x instead, newer production model. I had one though mistakenly sold it and got an M8.2 which I don't like that much. The M9 is in another league though but price is a major issue for me. RD1 color and B&W is great.
