M9-p, its official now

Actually it's good to see that Leica are not just resting on their laurels with the uber successful M9 ... this has moved the camera squarely into the twentieth century!

Ok, it took me a minute. LOL good one.

I like the new engraving, just like my M3.

But my M9 with it's Giotto glass is just fine. Also use the Giotto cover on my M8.

Neither camera is going anywhere for a long time. I tend to hold onto cameras that I like, even if they are Digital. My oldest DSLR will be 20 years old soon. I'll take it out and upload some shots with it.

Yeah honestly it's kinda hard to rationalize the fact that there are no upgrades whatsoever in the electronic hardware or the rear screen. I was hoping there would be a big surprise update for the rear screen... beyond the sapphire. Two years for small cosmetic changes is an odd product cycle. Compition in this FF RF market might be a good thing for us consumers.

Competition in any market is a good thing for consumers.

But i agree, one of these other companies should come out with something. If they could get it around $3500, I think a lot of people would make the leap ( i know i would). it'd break it wide open on the lenses too. The more bodies they sell, the more their glass becomes desired since the average joe is now playing in the RF world. Guess thats a bad thing for prices on glass!

Pretty..............but is it worth the extra $$$$ just 4 some slight cosmetic changes????

I guess for the folks that can afford it I suppose :/ Just wish Leica would make something that's really PRO-M and add features that count in the picture taking, like faster uploading/shutter etc. , more magnification in the finder- like a M3 finder 0.92, offer some custom finders like 35-50-90 only and make stronger batteries = longer life, maybe improve on the systems set up/buttons etc. ~ not just adding a bullet-proof LCD screen and removing a RED dot, black electrical tape and a screen protector can do the same thing for less then $15 - sigh!

I do like the Sliver Chrome version, it's a look back at the old daze......................They should make a M9P/3 base it on the looks of the M3 and put only 35-50-90 in the viewfinder, vintage look vulcanite and offer a updated modern version of the f3.5/50 Elmar collapsible late mount style lens for it, that would be a SCREAMER!!!!! :D
60 YEARS LEICA M is coming up in 2014, maybe I can give them an idea?

Yes, if they were going to put a better protection for the screen, I would have also made it so you don't have to replace the entire back and would have upgraded the quality of view, which isn't as good as a 6 hundred dollar Canon SLR.

If this is a direct replacement for the M9 (ie, being sold as the ONLY M9), I don't see why all the negativity.
They've improved the look (imo) and made the screen more durable. They aren't asking you to upgrade, simply releasing an improvement over the first model.

Also, the extra dollars doesn't just reflect what has gone into it, but changing prices of raw materials etc...

When a company repeatedly offers these types of 'upgrades' when there's features of the camera that really do call for improvement, they get the jibes they deserve IMO ... and most of it has been pretty good natured! (so far!)

I'm waiting for the white version myself! :D

I would love to have a body for the Leica lenses from a manufacture that would truly get innovative. I mean, it isn't that hard. There are examples of simple upgrades everywhere.

Personally I think the sensor in the M9 is innovative. My gripe with the M9-P is that evryone and especially Leica, knows that users of the M8 wanted a scratch proof LCD screen and it was delivered in the M8.2. So why wasn't it delivered on the M9. Leica knew people wouldn't like the plastic version and they could easily have put the crystal version on the M9. They are taking the p**s.

Sure, it's been good natured.

I don't know anything at all about the Leicas, apart from what was written in the original posting. Are the M9s no good?

Whats the problem !.
Long ago I progressed from Leica, but a buyer can feel secure that with his m-9 / m-9 p a new model release every six months doesnt render his hard earned money being reduced to dust like my continued path down the dslr trail. If the m-9 p suits your needs /wants then the investment remains secure, I assume the camera is for photography and not a lapel badge.

Soo purrty.

Of course by the time I have enough cash to blow on an M9, the M11-P will be out.

All of this reinforces the economic principle of competition being a very, very good thing (and in this case absolutely non-existant).

I dont think Leica wanted to Alienate current M9 owners by adding a bunch of new features. I think this is meant for M8 owners looking to upgrade, Potential M9 buyers, and people who simply can afford to have the newest camera.

This is what Leica does. We should all be used to it by now. The fact that they get away with it is down to us, the punters, who support the whole system either by buying new or recycling the older stuff. If there were no market for second hand M8s or M9s, ................................ Its not good or bad, it just is.

My point exactly, they had these things already in use on the M8.2 or the M8 upgrade, why not put it on their flagship M9 from the get go?

I just don't understand these guys anymore, the odd ball advances, the a$$ raping price structure, virtually non-exsistant pro repair support...I mean...wow...

I tell you what, all it would take is for a company like Nikon to come out with a $3,000-$4,000 RF rig that takes M lenses, a bomber weather sealed body with their awesome thought put into the menus and button layout, maybe even the simply amazing X100 like frame lines, a nice 12-20 MP CMOS sensor that is equal to something like the D3S in terms of noise reduction and I would spring for that $5,000 35 1.4-II in a heartbeat.

Until then, this company simply baffles me, truly!
