Does the M9 have a USB outlet to connect directly to a computer like my D300 or do I have to remove the card to transfer files? I should think so, but knowing Leica.....

Why you'd want to do this is beyond me - using an SD card reader is much faster than doing direct USB transfer, and doesn't chew up the battery life of your camera.

Most card readers are rubbish and risk of corrupting a memory card might be a reason. It's also bit easier/faster to plug in a cord than remove the bottom plate for some people.
 
Hmm No power surges in the mains in Finland? That can ruin your camera, even if the computer survives. USB is slow and less reliable than a card reader. I've never heard of a card reader corrupting a card, but otherwise put the writelock on before you read....Not to mention tripping over the USB cable btw.:p
 
I always use a card reader. Of the numerous digital cameras I've had over the last decade, I don't think I've ever taken the cable that connects the camera to a computer via USB out of the box. Never had a card corrupted by a card reader.
 
What I did hear of, though, is problems with corrupted images when using USB on various cameras, including the M9. The M9 is a bit finicky with SD cards anyway ( although far less so with the newest firmware)
 
with my old PC I have to use USB because the PC only accept SD-cards via card reader with max. 1 GB!
