Interesting comment - expert users have reported it very clean and a 2 stop improvement over the M8. But go ahead and rationalize why you will never buy it...🙄

DR should be about 12 stops. I'm sure there will be tests out.

I have no problem at all rationalizing why I won't buy it!

I simply don't have the money and will be unlikely to do so for several years ... I have my fingers crossed for the longevity of my M8! 😛
 
My take on looking at one DNG file from Getdpi.com, where the file seemed underexposed by about 3/4 of a stop at 1000 ISO, is that this new M9 performs as I'd expect it to. 1DS MKIII files I've seen didn't look significantly better at 1600ISO, if any better at all. I would compare the M9 files to the 5D files I get from my work camera but a little sharper. For my needs I would really appreciate 1250ISO at the level 640ISO was on the M8, or maybe a tad better. That is something I'd have to judge for myself with real world use.

Long and short of it: If I had the money I'd get one. The bugs that irked me the most seem long gone and I can only hope to raise the funds soon enough to resurrect my M lenses before they lock up from lack of use. 35mm colour neg film is dead to me now and I'm limiting myself to 100ISO medium format film for my latest work anyway. I'll wait and see how you lucky early adopters find the M9 in actual use.

Fair enough. Nothing wrong with the M8. I'm hanging on to mine 🙂 I have a feeling that it will turn out M8 images have a desirable character all of their own, notwithstanding whatever quality the M9 produces.

Highest ISO film I ever shot that was "any good" was Fuji NPZ (colour Neg - no push). I liked it but boy, it would have been great in the darker churches/banquet halls to be able to use ISO 2500+ but that, at least to me, wasn't possible only back 7-8 years ago.

High ISO is what a lot of folks want 🙂

True, but the question that should be asked is how high is *high enough for my purposes* ?

I don't believe that the majority of camera users out there really *need* a spotless ISO 1600.
 
poor and deceiving high ISO quality (starting from Iso 1000). I keep my nikon FF and hope that a Nikon "S" would see the light...or a R-D2 !

And taking the bus home... which is probably a very "green" thing to do. So I guess you could say that Leica is doing it's part for global warming....??No CO2 emissions from the M9... right??

It's a lot of money for a camera, and certainly beyond any possible justification I could make, but it's nice to see the M9 at last, so that the pondering of the M10 can commence.

I applaud Leica for keeping such a short time span on real information and the introduction. I applaud those people who have such a strong feeling about the camera that they are willing to make serious change in life style and finances to commit to the device.

Depending on the usage.

Those who are using it, as you've mentioned (or someone in this thread mentioned), for vacation pics outdoors would clearly not give a hoot.

Wedding shooters would want it for sure.
Riccis, Ascough and others who shoot weddings (or would shoot weddings) with an M would want it.

Reporters may want it - depending on where they were reporting on / from.

Studio folks?? well, I don't know many using an M camera for that purpose but who knows - I doubt they would want it.

It really would depend on what market segment or what type of photographer would like it - That said, there are still a lot of folks out there that use the 5D MK II and D700 just outdoors as well but that High ISO really is useful in situations when you're stuck and can't (or not allowed to) use flash.

ISO 1600 - I need it

Gotta say. I don't like flash and I do like candid photography. Now that I have a clean 1600 on the D3, I use it all the time. I shot much of my brother's wedding with it. I live in Vermont. We have looooong dark winters. Much of my photography is done indoors by room light.

1600. Don't know how I ever lived without it.

The more people don't like the M9 the better I think. There are too many people running around with M's who don't appreciate them. Forget the price and brand...it's a full frame rangefinder digital camera with the best lenses in the world. Those who don't like it can't focus it and those who compare it's sensor to whatever probably wouldn't even know how to utilise it's qualities even if the sensor was the best in the class....probably taking useless pictures of flowers, dogs and whatever else.....

The M9 was built for those who appreciate the M system and understand it's advantages over other SLR systems. Before digital how many of you shot with ISO1600 on a regular basis with film? I bet a very small percentage. The M9 is easily as good as film, and in some ways higher resolving, so....hate it all you like guys- you don't want the M9, and others do, so what!?! Go buy somehting else and let those that appreciate it be happy.

Cameras are simply a light box with control over aperture and shutter, resulting in an exposure...they're not sophisticated space rockets. I hear too many people whining about cameras not being the camera they wanted. Well guess what...Leica doesn't make cameras for 'you' and never will....you can sook on this forum all you like but they're not gonna make a high rez video AF M camera that makes your bed any time soon, so don't think they're gonna listen to you on this forum and produce it next week.

BTW, is this the RFF forum, or DPReview?
