Hi all. Was at my local Leica dealer today in Melbourne and he was saying that there was only 6 weeks to go until the release of the M9. He wasn't willing to bet his house on the rumer, but he was insistant that within 6 weeks it will appear with a RRP in Australia of $11500 AUD or about $8000USD.

Fact or fiction?

Andrew.

September 9 seems to be the rumoured date for a Leica announcement of some kind. There's a great deal of speculation saying that an M9 will be announced at 9:09 on that date. The usual huge pinch of salt is advised.

I was told by a UK specialist Leica dealer that it would be announced within about 2-3 months too with a retail of about 5k GBP. All the usual stuff of FF sensor, 18mp, no need for IR filters, slightly bigger than M8, bla bla. He was absolutely adamant that he heard this from where it matters. I guess we have to wait and see! Could be tosh, but quite a few reputable dealers seem quite confident of this announcement on the M9 and so I would not be surprised if it turns out to be broadly accurate.

Hi Shane as you'r aware there are only two dealers in Melbourne and they're nearly next to each other, I satisfied that I wasn't being fed a line, perhaps you can make your own enquiries. Andrew.

Hi Keith, it wouldn't matter how much they charge for it, there will be a que of people wanting it, cash in hand; look at the price of the new Noctilux. There's plenty of buyers for the Canon 1DS III and the Nikon D3X in the same price range, you have an M8 don't you? We all said the same thing about the price of it when it came out.

Just think ... add the new Noctilux, a couple of basic accessories and suddenly you have a rig 'worth' (and I use that term loosely) $25000.00 AUD!

And amazingly they will be out there as you say! :D

... but not me I might add! :(

Must admit if it's all the camera we hope it'll be, I'm in the queue. But it might be better flying to Singapore or Hongkong for a few days and picking it up there. All up, still cheaper than buying it in Oz and a holiday for free.

If it's the camera it should be I would love to own one ... my M8 frustrates me endlessly with it's inability to provide images (usable) in low light with a genuine 35mm perspective. I even thought about the new 25mm Summilux ... until I saw the price!

Decent ISO performance at 1600 and a full frame sensor would make this camera unmatchable in certain situations where discretion is required ... such as the ones I constantly find myself in at galleries where I spend the entire evening back pedaling with my 35mm f1.2 Nokton!

In some ways depending on how you see it ... I guess it could be worth eleven big ones to own the most discreet effective low light digital camera ever made! Unfortunately I'll need a wealthy relative to die and leave me an inheritance I can fritter! (unlikely) :p

Alright Andrew, I'll go and ask the cool folks working at Camera Exchange tomorrow if I'm in the City ;-)

It would be awesome if Leica comes with a full frame sensor Leica M9, although I'll have to win a small lottery to even consider buying one ;-p

Being very upset of the plastic "look" of digital images (I have tried and sold D700 with prime lenses in a week), I doubt that M9 will change my view. I am very happy with my M7.

Does it sound like Leica is rushing a new product to market, again?

I can only wish the M9 will be a success.

Hardly rushing ... this may turn out to be the camera they should have released two and a half years ago! :D

Well-well. It seems some dealers have started to read old threads in the forums :D
But yes - that is the word. Let's wait for the facts -09-09-2009...;)

Thats not too expensive :p
Just sell the car, the bonus is more time for street photography on your way back and forth to work.

Now, if every RFF member sends in a dollar-- how many would be available for the winners of the drawing? ;-) Would the drawing have to be held in Vegas?

Regards, John
