Ah well. When I was a student I had a Pentax K1000 and a 50/1.7. And I lusted for a Leica R4sp. Or a Nikon F3HP. Or a Hassleblad kit. And I had no car at all.

Real students, who have the money for a Leica (or rich daddies/sugar daddies) are eligible -- but you can't just become a student to get a cheap Leica.
You have to admire the timing.

My college photo professor used an M4 and spread the Leica gospel. His two TA's used Leica's because of him. And when I became one of his TA's myself, I purchased an M7. Now as a professional, I use my M8 regularly on assignment, and will continue to do so with an M9.
I'm hooked for life.

I am currently a photography/art student and have known about this program for about a month now and I sold a mp and a 35 lux to fund a M9. But now I am having a hard time justifying it. Should I put my money in lenses and shoot my M4-p with fancy glass. Or should I take the M9 plunge? I was planning on going with the M9 but now am having second thoughts. I really love shooting rangefinders which is why I would buy this camera. I am not sure what to do yet I have a local dealer trying to get me one but I can always change my mind. I have been working on my Bachelors for quite a while and don't know how much longer I will be able to take advantage of this...

what we should do is pair up students with no money and a discount, with M9 seekers with money who are not students, and let the efficient market work its magic

When I told my wife about the student discount, she said "call Sara, she'll do it." Sara is my daughter and is in school at the moment working on an advanced degree. OK, so maybe she isn't a photography major, but why can't I find such a student and work out a deal? Don't people do this to find surrogate mothers? I can just see the listings on Craig's list now.

haha I'm a student and cant afford an m9 but as has been said i''ve owned some pretty awesome camera stuff. bronica's, xpan, rb67, canon 1d and a stack of ef lenses. leica m2 (briefly) bessa's, m4-p, a fair amount of m/ltm lenses. Its just a case of careful buying and selling and not wasting money on tv's and cars (who needs a car as a student anyway) and buying cheap supermarket brand vodka for the nights out lol
however Im open to student discount, If anyone buys me an m9 ill consider it a 100% discount 🙂

As a student myself, an M8 + good glass would give more bang for buck if you want to go with a digital M. A D700 or used 5d also makes an excellent kit.

I think the bottom line of the program is that it's there for those who can take advantage of it. I think it's sort of crass bashing Leica for their part in trying to help out students. Will all students that want an M9 be able to afford one? Of course not, but if the program helps a few out, then it is a success.
