Macro ring users?

Has anyone ever used a macro ring with a RF? I am familiar with this method used in SLR, I wonder how you can frame and focus. Or are there special gizmos necessary for that.
In other words, is it too much hassle or is it worthwile?

Some close up sets for rangefinders/scale focused cameras consist of a diopter, and a wire frame. When the lens is set at infinity, the diopter makes it focus at a known distance. The wire frame has the correct position and distance from the body. When the subject is inside the frame, then it's in focus.

With SLRs, these gizmos dissappeared almost completely, except for underwater photography where they're still en vogue..
