magnum photographers advise wearing good shoes, among other things

These green ones are my primary kicks (Puma 917s),

but the red ones have been getting their share of miles (Volcoms).

i used to wear a worn out pair of skate shoes, but since getting orthotics I've been wearing a pair of running shoes. I intend to buy something less conspicuous eventually.

Usually hiking boots or black leather New Balance tennis shoes. But now I remember how much I like Rockports. I should order a pair...

It depends on where I'm going and who and what I'm photographing. With a suit, probably a pair of Bostonian cap toe lace up shoes. LL Bean penney loafers go with slacks and a jacket, but mostly it's Sperry Topsider leather deck shoes, no socks, with jeans. With political and corporate photography a lot of times the way you look is the important thing. I try to dress to fit in.

What a bunch of metrosexuals!

What a bunch of metrosexuals!

I know what all my shoes are called as well.

Yeah right

;-)

oh hell yeah. When on assignment. i wear damn comfy shoes. Usually a pair of casual merrells. Lately I have a pair of Timberland oxfords. Never ever wear sneakers on someone else's time.

One of the reasons I really hate doing weddings is that my formal shoes are terribly uncomfortable. I end up limping toward the end of the night.

Not finished on the Magmum "Advice" part of the blog, but I like Chris Anderson's two cents best so far.

Shoes? As Al says, depends on the occasion: for anything formal (note: I next to never wear a tie...a proper shirt, Dockers cords and a smart jacket fit the bill most anywhere "proper"), I have a pair or dressy but low-key Eccos that are as deadly-comfy as they are dressy. Otherwise, there's that five-year-old pair of Gore-Tex-lined Blunnies that I love to death, except that they're literally close to dead, and Blundstone doesn't make them anymore, and nothing else I've found suits...all aren't low-key enough. So I just ordered some boots and suave slip-ons from Land's End (where much of my wardrobe's been coming from the last few years anyway). Remember, looking the part is somewhat important, but not killing your feet by day's end is at least a bit more important.

My own wardrobe advice for photographers of any stripe? Please, stop dressing like a downtown Ninja, okay? Even B-movie baddies show better taste these days.

Edit: Of course, my personal hero, Elliott Erwitt, has advice just about as sanguine.

An old pair of Materhorn hiking boots with the Vibram soles...
I picked them up while working in Calgary...Army/Navy Surplus store...
They are soooo worn out that about ten years ago I actually threw them away...needless to say I still have & wear them...
I wear them now when I don't want to worry about what I might be stepping in...
I have a new pair of other boots (5 years old) but they're just not the same and just barely broken in...The Materhorns were comfy from day one...actually wore them out of the store because I didn't want to take them off...

it's a very cool blog now that Alec Soth has taken to reinvigorating it. I'm sure it will quickly have a huge following and buzz in the photography world.

I don't change shoes when I make photographs, that just seems silly.

As for the shoes I wear...
Hiking/Rainy: Adidas hiking boots (Keep meaning to switch these out for some nice leather boots, but money is tight)
Town/Class: Burgundy Cole Haan captoes, Tan Rockport slipons, Soft boxy leather shoes (soft as a pair of Moccasins)

Hiking boots = Haix
Stepping out shoes = R.M.Williams boots
Casual wear = Crocs or thongs
Runners = haven't owned a pair for at least 10 years
