Thanks Helen -- going by what I learned from your experiences, I asked first with trooper shot. Other shot, the guy never noticed -- which was interesting.

I saw a selfie among these images too.

What a great eye you have. Some true gems among these images....I too really liked the 3 women looking in different directions. The trooper image is downright scary. I'd worry about the one on the left -- he looks so gung-ho I'd just rather not interact with him. The doorman image is so classic. Love it. The passerby, passerby image is the kind of thing I wish I could do. Love it too.

All with a Rolleiflex TLR!

A little cruel but brilliant! So many wonderful shots here.

Can I ask about your focusing technique with the Rollei Dan? Do you zone focus, pre-focus on a spot and wait for your target, scale focus? The Rolleiflex isn't an obvious street camera but you make it look easy

Thanks, and great questions Steve. Home base for me is 10ft. You need to have a camera with an accurate distance scale, or if not, know what's what. I've gotten really good at knowing when I'm 10 feet away. So if I'm going to be closer I guess that, and if I need to include a bit more info then I'm at 12 or 15 feet. When in doubt, I will find another "target" equidistant from the subject I wish to photograph, and then pivot and and shoot. If I have time to critical focus, I do. I get satisfaction and kicks from shooting while walking backwards or matching my pace to subject's. And I enjoy friendly interactions with people after I take shots, as situations permit. The only time I feel not like a prisoner is when I'm out walking, going anywhere my feet take me, and just looking at a plate full of special.

Got it - thanks for the explanation. I'm pretty good at judging distances by eye but the focus scale on my 3.5f is a bit out of whack so I think I would struggle to replicate your results (although lack of talent is probably a more significant issue!)

Dan,
A dollar down the drain. Brilliant, although you post this just as the dollar has been getting stronger against the euro recently. What does it all mean?

CNNY LOL Many people walked by this poor, lonely, wet dollar. I wondered who would pick it up, and if it would make a good shot. So I waited and waited. I chose a spot, picked a distance, and tried to pretend I wasn't watching. Finally a woman stopped and picked it up -- she wasn't European, so I doubt she grabbed it to capitalize on a favorable exchange rate. Unfortunately, she came from a direction that didn't work well for my taking a photo. After she picked it up, she held it away from her and shook it as she walked so it could drip dry. Then she pocketed it. Hopefully she used it to buy Purell. :) So this is basically the shot that didn't pan out and lead to something better. But, I had my thinking cap on.

Your photographs are wonderful, street in the true sense of the word. Thank you also for the tips and tricks guidance you give, it is very very helpful. I've got a 2.8f and would love to feel confident taking photos on the street, usually feel a bit afraid though.
Keep these fab photos coming NY_Dan.
