Major internet problem with RFF...

this is a weird one, but i thought i'd check to see if anyone else has experienced this.

a few months ago, my internet service intermitently stopped working EXCEPT for rangefinderforum. in other words, i can't get anywhere on the internet, in any browser, except for rff. i can go to any link that's part of the site including threads, ads, etc that i've never clicked on before. usually we unplug the modem and let it reset and in a few minutes, things go back to normal.

i have earthlink dsl at home. we use a wireless router and 2 apple powerbooks.

i've called earthlink about this and they know nothing. has anyone else experienced anything like this?

any help will be appreciated.

The only thing I can think is that you might have an open connection with cached DNS for RFF. This would allow you to keep browsing RFF, if something went really wrong with the DNS servers on your network. I am assuming many things, like you are on RFF when everything breaks, and that you have tried the other powerbook to see if you can get to other sites. Need more information.

the internet stops working on the other powerbook at the same time. there isn't anything specific that has happened every time it goes offline. i've tried every program in my computer that accesses the internet when this happens and nothing works except firefox on rff.com.

Is it possible somebody had access to your wireless router? It is very possible, and easy, to set filters on what can be accessed. I'm not sure how you'd do it accidentally, but you could filter everything except for a specific site. On my routers (Netgear, Xyxel) it's called Web Filtering. Try a factory reset on your router. Also, try accessing directly, bypassing your router, using a cable directly to your modem.

your modem is puking. Intermittent failures increase in frequency until the thing dies outright. Get it replaced.

When these devices suffer failures, it isn't of a predictable and common sense nature. They act weird because the circuitry is haywire. If resetting the modem fixes it, it's the modem at fault.
