making "theater" out of photography

On days when I can't go photograph, I typically look through all of my negatives to find the "almost" photographs that just barely didn't make the cut. I then try and salvage those photos using creative techniques. Generally they end up looking like theater.

What are your thoughts on extreme burning to make a theatrical spotlight type effect?

Special effects can add the photographer's feelings to a picture. Just as a style can add a painter's character or feelings to a painted scene.
Whether it comes out "good" or "bad" is always (and endlessly) arguable.

 Theater? I have been in many. It doesn't looks like theater.
But portraits with specific light technique. :)

I used to add heavy vignetting on scans. Now I just print.
