My iso and shutter speed dials have suddenly begun malfunctioning. It seems like the ISO dial no longer changes ISO and the shutter speeds shown in the display are correct for some speeds (2000 - 60) but totally weird below that. Hard to describe. Definitely not a corroded contact issue as those are generally intermittent and tempermental.

Anyone experience a similar failure and what was involved in the repair? I live very close to Steve's Camera Service and will drop it off tomorrow morning. I'll report on the verdict once known.

Sad as this happened as I was testing out a newly purchased Elmarit-M 28, my second lens for this camera :-(

just my suggestion, but have you tried to unscrew the dials?
sometimes it the spring get stuck in the gearwheel. In my case it was stuck and couldn't move at all so changing the shutterspeed wasn't possible for 250-2000.

would love to hear what was wrong after you have dropped it at an experts place.

Sad news. Just heard from Steve, he cannot fix the camera. Will know more details when I pick it up.

So now what to do.

I had just picked up an Elmarit-M 28/2.8 v4 and the camera broke while testing the lens. I have a few days to decide whether to return it and just punt on the whole thing and put the money into a Fuji system.

Or spend ~$1k+ on another R-D1, $2k on an M8 plus a few UV/IR filters, or perhaps the Fuji XE1 with M mount adapter.

Any other ideas?

Try contacting Bellamy at Japan Camera Hunters (LINK) .

He has in the past been a facilitator between Epson and international customers. When my RD1 fails, I will be sending it to Epson through him.

had similar problem too

had similar problem too

hello,
sorry to hear about that, i had a similar problem with my second r-d1, all dials were non functional.
i also took it to steve's camera first, he also told me he could not fix it (it needs a new motherboard), so i took it to an epson repair center and they shipped it out to their repair facility (in japan?).
got the camera back a couple of weeks later, i think it cost me $5-600.
the odd thing is that they did not repair it, they sent me a brand new one.

i subsequently sold it, but i think i might be getting one again in the near future.

incidentally, i also own a fuji x-e1 (only shoot with mf lenses), and it is the closest shooting experience to the epson that i have found so far - not the same, obviously, but close.

Thanks for the info. I heard that Epson is no longer servicing the original R-D1 so I decided to not even pursue that route. I can't see dumping 5-600 into this camera at this point. For not much more I can pick up another one that is probably in better condition.

My current plan is to purchase an X-Pro1 with M mount adapter as well as acquire an M8 from a family member. I will probably keep my eyes out for a good deal on another R-D1 in the future depending on how I like using the M8.
