Hi..I would be grateful for someones knowledge about the Mamiya 6.
I just received the camera in the post this morning. I've put new batteries in and the meter is working. I haven't put a film in yet as I don't want to waste one. I notice that the shutter doesn't click after I advance the winder except for when the film door is open when it seems to work normally. Praps I should risk putting a film in but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this.
Many Thanks for your time.

That's normal operation. When the film door is closed, the camera needs film in it in order to fire the shutter. I think there is a wheel which is turned by film moving over it and this in turn charges the shutter.

This is normal, you can´t release the shutter of a mamiya 6 or 7 unless there is either film in in or the door is open. If the meter is working and the shutter clicks with the door open, everything should be in working condition.

Wind on with care, not too fast or vigorously.
The gears in the film advance system are delicate. This is s known issue with the Mamiya 6. You can strip the gears if you advance too hard. It happened to me years ago. Fortunately the camera was still in production and I was able to get a repair, but now there are no more replacement parts.

I am being quite careful I'd heard about winder problems though not the cause. Your words "Strip the gears" will certainly make me wind on gently..Thanks!
